A third-generation Chinese-American who is eccentric, multitalented, and cute as a button, Kristina Wong straddles the line between stand-up comedian and socially conscious commentator, creating unique solo theater shows in the process. Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nestexplored the high incidence of depression and suicide in Asian women, and fans of the Mad Cat Theatre Company might remember its 2010 production of her Going Green the Wong Way, about the contradictions of the biofuel movement. Now she’s back in Miami with a topic fit for the pop-culture Zeitgeist: animal hoarding. In Cat Lady, her first piece for a full ensemble, she’s the feline collector of the title, and the play also explores aggressive pick-up artists and animal psychics on the fringes of society. The cast includes Noah Levine, Jessica Farr, and, in the most ingenious casting of all, Ken Clement as Mad Cat’s mad cat. Paul Tei, the company’s artistic director, will return to Miami to direct the production, which opens with a preview performance this Thursday at 8 p.m.
