Norman Braman Is a Phony, and So Are His Candidates

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke goes after the County Commission's biggest enemy.

Car magnate, activist, and billionaire Norman Braman has everyone fooled. He's not really interested in reforming Miami-Dade County government. This is all part of a grand scheme to build his brand by promoting his name as a concerned civic leader. He's a phony. But what do you expect from a car salesman? They'll say anything to get you to buy a car off the lot.

It's a helluva marketing scheme. He is getting free advertising in the Miami Herald and on local TV stations. Every other day, there's a new Braman headline. He's just keeping his name out there to sell more Bentleys, Cadillacs, and BMWs. Heck, he recently opened a Kia dealership, so he needs more middle-class customers. His campaign is for his own self-interest.

The proof is in the crackpots and nobodies he's supporting against the African-American county commissioners in the August 14 primary. Braman is not interested in recruiting the best candidates. If that were the case, he would have found some of the brightest young minds to run for office. Instead, he's backing Alison Austin, the chief executive of TACOLCY, a nonprofit Liberty City group, to face off against Audrey Edmonson. Austin is a nice lady, but she couldn't even beat Rev. Richard Dunn II for Miami commissioner. Almost no one in Liberty City knows her.

In South Miami-Dade, Braman is supporting a Tea Party radical, Dade County Farm Bureau president Alice Peña, against Dennis Moss. This lady is far to the right; she wants county government to get rid of the department that handles environmental protection. Braman is also backing former Miami Gardens mayor Shirley Gibson, who won the endorsement of anti-gay group the Christian Family Coalition, versus Barbara Jordan.

Braman is taking a page out of mega-lobbyist Ronald Book's playbook. He wants to control the black commissioners and at the same time get people to say, "I like what Braman is doing in politics — let me go buy a new car from him." But his plan will backfire in the black community.

African-American voters are not stupid. They won't vote for Braman's puppets. And they certainly won't buy a car from one of his dealerships.

Luke, I agree with you 100%, Norman is pushing his own cause and for those of us that can not see beyond his money are silly. When was the last time Braman has come out and supported anything in our community? Tell me, how many of us work at one of his dealerships? The only race i am truly interested in is the District One race. I hope Shirley Gibbons will not allow this phony Braman to push his agenda on her and continue to bring jobs to the district.

Luke, the reason I stopped advertising in The New Times was you. You are an insult to this community.  As a business model the New Times must not be too concerned with you as a liability.  You don't stir the pot in a way to generate more readers and that is bad for the dying press media. The New Times Editor needs to re-evaluate the value of Luke Campball and realize that he is pushing advertisers away.

from the small dozen of people in the world  that notice you uncle luke, seems overwhelmingly that you are wrong again. what's new?  new times come on ...he goes away now

Luke, You're a moron. Norman Braman has done more good for the downtown area, than any other single person in Miami. Not too long ago, you were kissing his ass in an interview, after he got our corrupt mayor recalled.

Mr. Braman is against the Gettings assault on our community, I support his position, just coming back from Las Vegas on a business trip I found myself face-to-face with Miami 2025 and it was not a pretty sight.  Let's not lose sight of our unique location and the smart minds of our community to take us down a positive road to prosperity without the need to promote gambling. Gambling is a poorly disguised form of acceptable theft. There's no such thing as a free lunch-hard work perseverance and respect for your neighbors will get you much further that a roll of quarters and a dream.

Keep hope alive!

By "assault" did you mean bringing tens of thousands of new jobs to Miami, or was the "assault" the billions of dollars to be infused in the local economy? Maybe the "assault" would be the boost in tourism from out of the country. People who would deny our city the progress and econmic boost should be ashamed.

Luke, Dear Jesus pray for your tortured soul!  You have a limited intelligence and are driven by your need to be a rebel. Your limited by your ego as an old-school clown it's time to hang up the floppy shoes and rubber nose and get back to understanding why our powerful God put you on this earth.

Try to find truth in your soul and honesty in your heart to avoid the flames of hell in which you will be condemn as God is my witness.

Find true! No Bullshit!

Luke you are as corrupt and phony as it gets! Without even touching politics how about discussing your alignment to the very corrupt sore losers over at Northwestern High school. Their football team is full of hoodlums. Starting with the coaches then trickling to the players and even the cheerleaders.

You are such a sore loser that when they fair and square lost games you bashed the other teams. Talk about teaching sportsmanship! You are a has been only kept alive by the Miami Times that allows you to talk your stupidity!

I guess that everyone forgot that back in the late 60's and early 70's, that scum bag was sellinjg cars to all the drug dealers. They would come into his dealership with bags of cash. He does have everyone fooled.  He should be in prison.

Are you kidding me?!? Who didn't sell cars to drug dealers in Miami? I think you meant the 80's not the 60's and 70's!

Hey Luke, I  know you need the ratings man, but  stop talking out of your ass. Just a week ago you were telling everyone to vote for joe martinez. The ex-cop that is probably one of the most racist, shallow and self centered individuals I have ever met.

He was bought and sold years ago by the elite developers in this town, he also amost suceeded into turning kendall into a concrete jungle similar to hialeah.  Thank god for Braman, at least we have an equalizer with the balls and the money to balance the BS that is politics in Miami

You will find Norman Braman at the center of the group called No Casinos whose mission is to squelch any competition for the tourist and gambling dollars currently monopolized by the No Casinos group:  Disney, Micky Arison, the Seminoles and the racetrack owners.  They have employed underhanded tactics including paying off the Dade Heritage Trust to create a phony petition to preserve the old Miami Herald building in order to prevent the development of a world class casino on the site.  Braman is a bully in the guise of a civic minded leader.

Brad really spells it out like it is. When the resort issue gets put a vote so the people can decide, it will pass. Miami should not be held back by greedy billionaires.

Weak.I could argue that your a phony. You are typing this up for your political overlords that gave you compensation when you got dismantled in the elections for mayor. When Luther Campbell writes a half-finished journalistic piece with great potential people in the community will go and read his articles to develop the traffic and recognition he needs. In the end Luther Campbells goal of gaining a wider audience will be accomplished. 2 Like

I like Norman and his brash way of doing business and trying to take Miami forward. We need more like him in the area. Just maybe, he'll find a way to stem the tide of latin american visitors to Miami so it can be English spoken here only.
