Luke's Gospel: Obamacare Is as American as Apple Pie and Free Speech

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke explains why the Supreme Court got it right by upholding Obama's health-care reform.

As someone who knows what it's like to fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, I'm very happy for President Barack Obama and all the hardworking Americans who don't have health insurance. Last week, the justices voted 5-4 to uphold Obamacare as constitutional. The issue should never have been challenged in the first place. But leave it to the Republican Party to mess with people's right to a long, healthy life in the pursuit of happiness.

They don't have a problem with imprisoning people for nonviolent crimes like smoking a joint on a stoop. They don't have an issue with sending young men and women in the military to fight wars in the Middle East. But conservatives throw a fit and declare health insurance for everybody a war on freedom. It just proves how misguided the GOP's priorities are.

Asking the Supreme Court to weigh in on universal health care's legality was like asking the justices if murdering someone is against the law. It's a no-brainer. Hell, taxpayers are already footing the bill for public health insurance. It's called Medicaid. Besides, people who can afford health insurance have already been paying for it when it's deducted from their paychecks. Every employer should do the responsible thing and offer health care to its employees.

Obama's plan is already working miracles. For the first time in my 25 years of coaching youth football, all the kids have health insurance. Living a healthy life should be required for everybody.

Besides, we can't rely on Medicaid to keep bailing out our public hospitals. Just look at what's happened at Jackson Memorial. Right now, it is the only local medical facility that accepts people with no insurance. As a result, Jackson is always on the brink of shutting down because all the patients with insurance end up at the University of Miami hospital next door.

What will happen, God forbid, if Jackson closes its doors for good? We'll be a community with sick people dying in the streets. Are we really going to allow that to happen in Miami-Dade? Of course not.

At least now people with jobs who don't have health insurance can finally get it.

Luke, You must have employed many in your career. Did you pay for any or all of their health insurance ?

"What will happen, God forbid, if Jackson closes its doors for good? We'll be a community with sick people dying in the streets." Maybe they won't be shooting each other or running over bicyclists on Key Biscayne. Maybe they won't do drugs and chew off a homeless man's face ? Or how about all the airlifts for car accidents. JMH does/did all the free healthcare, mostly crimes and whatever other freebies are out there. I don't doubt there aren't identity thieves misrepresenting themselves at JMH ? Check the news stories on the audits at JMH, one case, an employee, had insurance and her insurance was never charged in a 3 week hospital stay. That was when they were uncovering things. The auditors would later defraud JMH. JMH is on the verge of shutting down from fraud & abuse, a healthcare system that is unaffordable even with Obamacare. I mean all these uninsured people, unemployed, where are they going to get the money for a $ 500-1,000/month premium ? The Fed might as well start printing out the money today for this and giving it to the healthcare system right now. 100% health insured doesn't work unless there is 100% employed. So before we get ahead of ourselves here, let's make sure people have the revenue and income at the micro level before we start charging or paying for expenses that there is no revenue for. That's how the bailout mess started for mortgages. People that couldn't afford the houses they bought were given the credit to purchase it. Obama says were not going back to what got us here. I disagree, healthcare and education are the next bubbles that will burst and when that happens, guess that President will bail it out as too big to fail. Time to stop the fraud & abuse.

Your "article" proves how misguided and uninformed you are, Mr. Campbell. Not only does this bill NOT provide a heathy lifestyle for everyone, it requires people without insurance to purchase it. Nothing is "given" to anyone under this measure. From where do you think such largesse comes? The insurance fairy is not empowered to deliver magical health insurance policies to the masses without jobs or who choose not to pay for ineffectual health coverage under their employers' plans. It simply forces those without insurance to buy it now or to pay IRS fines and penalties later. Much as the idea of redistribution of wealth would cover up the hard work of a few by "distributing" it to those who sat around and watched from the sidelines, this measure will only serve to cripple an already broken industry. Healthcare workers at all levels will feel the burden as government oversight sinks its' fangs into a system mired in paperwork and other administrative red tape. Look a little deeper into the facts and ask yourself just who is footing the bill for your football teams' health insurance. Surely not their parents, because if they were capable of providing insurance for their families they would have done so long before this bill was passed. If you're not paying for it out of your own pocket, and the insurance fairy isn't REALLY out there, then it must be the American taxpayer getting stuck with the bill. And lastly, all the insurance coverage in the world won't provide the healthy lifestyle of which you speak if the kids in question are being fed in the school cafeterias or at McDonald's... Partisan politics will never solve the problems of our country. I am neither Republican nor Democrat, but rather an informed American. The needs of our country are far greater than the needs of the controlling parties of our government. Where did we lose sight of that?

All partisanship aside, if you breath you need healthcare. I would say healthcare is more important than roads, and nobody has a problem with our taxes funding those. I don't like the current healthcare situation and the new laws may muddy the water even further, who knows. However, to whine about making America the healthiest nation on the planet is detrimental to your own existence, despite your misgivings about everyone paying a few extra dollars to ensure the weakest links of America are kept strong enough to support the entire chain.

"But leave it to the Republican Party to mess with people's right to a long, healthy life in the pursuit of happiness." I'm sick of all this partisan stupidity. As an Independent, I'm tired of watching you partisan idiots turn everything into a party issue. Lemme ask you a question Mr. Supreme Court Rocket Surgeon. Is Tipper Gore a Republican? Tipper Gore founded the PMRC, and isn't that your old nemesis? Both parties keep your drugs illegal. Both parties voted to send soldiers to war. Those statement are stupid. Those kids you coach? They all had Medicaid. You think this country was designed to take 1 person's property and just hand it out as the government sees fit like like the old USSR?! Why don't you take that Am. flag bandanna you used to wear, and stick it up your *?

No wonder your employees make more than you do. You don't even know the difference between "then" and "than", so who would really expect you to know how to run a profitable business...

If I understand, small business like yours are not affected. You need to employ at least 50 people to be required. I think you have a small mom-and-pop thing; you should not worry. Get informed.

you Sir, are wrong! I am a small business owner. I run a legit small business with four employees, my employees often make more then I do as an owner. This healthcare plan will seal the fate of all small business and cause more damage to the economy then the recession.

Like many (most?) laws, Obamacare isn't all good or all bad. The assessment of whether its more good than bad depends on one's principles. For my part, I see the removal of the "pre-existing condition" barrier as a positive, but the individual mandate as more negative than positive.

And by God the leftist lords of the land then stated, "That from this day forward let the whiners be pandered to no matter how stupid and borderline Socialistic their complaints are, and we will tax the Middle and Upper Class until the point that is seems like there is no point in having a good job, because if you do WE the government will just steal your money and punish you for doing well and give it to someone else through taxes whether that person deserves it or not." They will justify this under the guise of fairness, but be warned if you are doing well in life be wary liberals will always look for a way to screw you over because they think "You" don't deserve it or should not have it because its "Unfair", at least thats how they feel if you're a Conservative, or right leaning, in their minds you people like you should have to carry everyone else.

Campbell as usual What are you talking about ??? "Every employer should do the responsible thing and offer health care to its employees." This is a deduction from salary or tax. In fact; the employer will not pay for anything. - The employer will have to paid for YOU, in advance for your healthcare; deductible from YOUR salary, even if you got a private insurance. But, before taking your opinion. - What are the coverages from the government care???? - Who will benefit from it? And very soon, will have a doctor, hospital, and medications decremented to government profits? The only point i will agree with you, is; Everybody should be allowed to healthcare. Therefore; Campbell you are moron, racist, opportunist, and should be banned from toilet paper used as weekly newsletter.

What would be wrong with selling Medicaid elegibility to working poor. Not for free but on a "sliding scale", i.e. a price they can afford?
