Mayor Carlos Gimenez Is a Failure

Luther Campbell, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke assesses his old campaign foe's sorry job performance.

During almost ten months in office, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has done a good job of dressing up his achievements. He's made people believe he is following through on campaign promises. But Gimenez hasn't done anything to prove he's a reformer. In fact, it's business as usual at county hall.

The former fire chief has become a full-blown politician. He's interested only in raising money for re-election, protecting bureaucrats who make more than $100,000 a year, and getting rid of low-salary, rank-and-file employees who can least afford to lose their jobs.

He's a BS artist, and everybody who voted for him fell for his act. On the campaign trail, Gimenez boasted he would reduce the number of county departments from 60 to 25 and get rid of some of the bureaucratic dead wood. It seemed he followed through. But what he hasn't explained publicly, at least so far, is that when he cut the number of departments, he didn't get rid of any directors who earn six-figure salaries. He just shuffled job titles.

Sure, he cut his own salary in half, but then he awarded five new deputy mayors annual salaries of more than $200,000. Meanwhile, he's done a great job of threatening to lay off cops and has forced the police department to operate on a shoestring budget. That will make it tougher to catch dangerous criminals such as the thugs who shot up a funeral home near North Miami on March 31, killing two people and injuring 14.

Gimenez has also been wishy-washy about allowing development closer to the Everglades. He squashed Florida International University's proposal to move the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo to a site past the urban development boundary, but he didn't do anything to stop the county commission from approving Homestead-Miami Speedway's expansion into sensitive wetlands. He was also silent when commissioners approved a rock-mining operation on agricultural land that's within 100 feet of Everglades National Park.

I guess Gimenez has been busy collecting $1.6 million in contributions for his re-election campaign and pandering to Cuban-American voters about Miami Marlins skipper Ozzie Guillen. He hasn't had time to actually lead.

He did exactly the same thing with The City of Miami!

I remember him once saying "All I ever wanted was to be the City Manager". This was because his neighbor across the fence in his backyard was the previous corrupt City Manager Caesar Odio. Caesar told him that if he ever became an Officer on the job, he would appoint him as Chief of the Fire Department. They were buddies and confidants. So Carlos “Skipped” (Look this word up) his way to Captain without ever really fighting any fires because he stayed firmly rooted in the Rescue Division (back then the real hard work was in the Firefighting Division, today the pendulum has swung the other way) and when an opening appeared, Caesar kept his word and made Carlos the Fire Chief (Director of the Miami Fire Department). Since Carlos was a Rescue man his whole career of, what 15 years or so, he decided to change the traditional and historical name of the Miami Fire Department to the City of Miami Fire-Rescue. This was his prerogative, but for us old “Leather Lunged” and proud Miami Firefighters with that name going back to 1898, it was a slap in the face.

Back to the point, who would have ever guessed he would become the City Manager but us in the Department were happy to get rid of him because he raped us of every needed supply and support for over 10 years in order to brown nose his bosses the City Commission. (More corrupted sociopaths) We figured that at least up there he could spread his focus to other departments and not be solely on us. The real blessing was when he became the County Manager. “Good riddance to bad rubbish!” The further away from us the better. He is what we called back then a “One way MF” (You fill in the blanks) He only cared about himself and had absolutely no loyalty to his Department or his brother Firefighters and I am positive that although he pretends to represent the Citizens of Miami-Dade, he is still that same “One way …

The reason that they are politicians is because they can never do anything else. Not an honest day's work in their hands. And I heard that he had the "cojones" to ask cops to donate time that he can turn into money so he can help Trayvon Martin's parents. What happened to the parents of every other victim in Dade County? Who helps them? It is clear that he is only pandering at what seems to be the sensation story of the nation.

What is happening at the Miami Dade Animal Shelter is indicative of the almost complete failure of this administration. While animals are being slaughtered even as they have potential rescues or adopters lined up to take them out of that hellhole we call a shelter, Mayor Gimenez goes blithely along pretending that everything is fine. It is a complete lack of leadership. Re-electing Gimenez will simply mean more of the same.

Everybody knows by now, all politicians are completely full of sh!t; just the worst kind of low-life, criminal, co cksuckers you could ever wanna' run into - a funkin' piece of sh!t politicians And the proof of it, the proof of it is, they don't even trust each other.I think Americans really show their ignorance when they say they want their politicians to be honest. What are these funkin' cretins talking about? If honesty were suddenly introduced into American life, the whole system would collapse!

This is the best we can do. Let's face it, we have very little to work with. Garbage in, garbage out. Ignorant citizens elect ignorant leaders, it's as simple as that. And term limits don't help. All you do is get a new bunch of ignorant leaders. So maybe it's not the politicians who suck; maybe it's something else. Like the public. That would be a nice realistic campaign slogan for somebody: "The public sucks. Elect me." Put the blame where it belongs: on the people. Because if everything is really the fault of politicians, where are all the bright, honest, intelligent Americans who are ready to step in and replace them? Where are these people hiding? The truth is, we don't have people like that. Everyone's at the mall, scratching his balls and buying sneakers with lights in them. And complaining about the politicians.

Luc,

I have never read your Blogs before, but you hit the nail right on the head here. I worked under "Chief" Giminez and he only cared about one thing, himself. He left the Fire Department without any maintenance, supplies (toilet taper) or even Emergency Medical Equipment in order to brown-nose the Commissioners. There was a 10 year period where if a Fire Station needed painting or maintenance, we had to buy the supplies and do it ourselves. Plus, how can you respond to Emergency Medical Emergencies without Oxygen Masks, IV Solutions or the most basic Bandages. We were all glad to see him leave! No offense to the County Residents, but I remember all of our collective thoughts expressed in one word:

"SUCKERS!"

Gimenez has used lower level county employees (read non-managers/directors) salaries as his personal ATM. Hope he steals enough now. Come November, we'll remember.
