There’s really no such thing as Good Thursday, which we’re defining here as April 5, the night before Good Friday and Passover. But if you haven’t been sticking to your Lenten commitments, you can at least earn some points for showing up to support local music. To ring in the holiday weekend, the Stage this Thursday will present a night of four new rising area acts from across the rock spectrum, most of whose names will be new even to those who hit the local circuit hard.
Hailing from farthest away is Gainesville’s Of Valleys, a five-piece that’s clearly positioning itself for the intersection of VH1 watchers and Warped Tour-goers. This means oil-slick production on buoyant, sweet sing-along choruses and vaguely romantic and nostalgic lyrics.
Most of the other acts fall into the same spot on the pop-rock spectrum, including the similarly polished Mine All Mine. The quintet from Miami has shared the stage with acts such as We the Kings, whose fans will enjoy Mine All Mine’s bouncy, fun riffage. The lineup is rounded out by Your Favorite Franchise, which peddles more of the same crooned power pop, and Magazine Society, a band formerly known as the Albany and offering a bit more of a grown-up sound with its name change. You’ll have to be equally grown-up to attend: This is a strictly 21-and-older affair, and admission costs $6.
