How long has the Coconut Grove Playhouse (3500 Main Hwy., Coconut Grove) been out of commission? Nearly six years, which has been long enough for the building to fall into a really embarrassing condition. (Think pedestrian-endangering pieces falling off its sides.) The property is tied up in debt that no one — not its board of directors and not the county or state — wants to shoulder. And the standstill has Grove denizens frustrated. Some say the building, which dates to 1927, should be restored; others say it should be demolished to pave the way for new development. But pretty much everyone agrees that something has to be done with the wasted space, and soon.
If you agree, head to the playhouse Monday at 5:30 p.m. for Give It Back, a citizens’ gathering planned by concerned Grove residents who want to call attention to the lingering issue. They’re hoping to attract the attention of elected officials, the playhouse’s board members, or anyone else who might be able to get the ball rolling on a new plan for the aging building.
