Well before we jumped into this writing gig, a career as a professional locker room attendant on the ATP Tour was high on our list of potential job routes. The humble task of folding towels for a living seemed like an honest way of making a buck, the type of nine-to-five that would provide job security, health benefits and the chance to meet top-ranked Tennis players at their most vulnerable moments—on the toilet, in the shower, etc.
We gave it shot. An opening for a job as a part-time locker room attendant at the Sony Ericsson Open (Crandon Tennis Center, 7300 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne) caught our eye. A week later we were decked out in FILA gear and handing out Gatorade bottles to Andy Roddick.
Though the experience was incredibly gratifying, the pay—believe it or not—was less than what alt weekly journalists make. We gave up on our dream and went the writer route. However, we’re still huge tennis fans and super stoked about this year’s Sony Ericsson Open, Monday, March 19 through Sunday, April 1.
The world number one singles player, Novak Djokovic, will try and defend his title as last year’s champion against some of the biggest names in the sport. On the women’s side, Belarusian beauty Victoria Azarenka will defend her crown. Tickets costs $7 to $465. Visit sonyericcsonopen.com or call 305-442-3367.
