Two-Mile Carnaval

Miami’s biggest party is little more than a week away. Of course we’re talking about Calle Ocho, the multinational street festival attended by more than a million people each year. However, before the city’s gran pachanga on SW Eighth Street, several Kiwanis Club of Little Havana-sponsored events leading up to March 11’s fiesta have to happen first. And one of our favorites, Carnaval on the Mile, will kick off Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight and continue Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The festival takes place on Coral Gables’ famed Miracle Mile and is an all-encompassing two-mile, two-day feast of arts, culture, food, and drink. Best of all, no Britto! No, really — of the 100-plus fine artists and crafters participating in this year’s Carnaval on the Mile, there’s not a single mention of Miami-based “neo-pop artist” Romero Britto. Phew. Several Miami bands tackling the fest’s three live music stages include Locos por Juana, Spam Allstars, and Conjunto Progreso. Visiting acts include New Orleans-based Brass-A-Holics and Los Angeles-area Ozomatli.
Sat., March 3, 11 a.m.-8 p.m., 2012
