Mais Oui

Those crazy Frenchmen. So angsty. So amorous. So delicate, and yet so egotistical.

Don't believe the stereotypes? Go see The Conquest, director Xavier Durringer's ripped-from-the-headlines tale of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's rise to power. The film addresses everything you've heard about the politician: the womanizing, the political trickery, the confrontations with power players, all of which led him straight to France's most powerful seat. The subject matter of the film alone was enough to necessitate teams of lawyers poised to defend it against accusations of libel.

Get a dose of recent world history when The Conquest returns to Miami at Miami Beach Cinematheque (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach). The film runs Friday through March 14 daily, starting at 8:45 p.m. Tickets cost $10, $9 for students and seniors, and $8 for cinematheque members. Call 305-67-FILMS or visit mbcinema.com.
