Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness once made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be forMiami New Times. This week, Luke explains why a 2 Live Crew reunion tour will prove booty music desegregated hip-hop.
After 2 Live Crew and I performed at the 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors show, I began negotiations to give the public what it wants. Music fans want to see the original members of 2 Live Crew performing onstage together. That's because we were the first rap group to appeal to every demographic in America, even though we didn't get any respect from rappers in New York like Run-D.M.C., Eric B. & Rakim, and Salt-n-Pepa. They used to boycott our shows and go on BET to talk smack about 2 Live Crew and Luke Records.
We weren't getting any respect in the hip-hop game because no one believed Southern rappers could regularly sell out shows and go platinum. We proved them wrong day in and day out. 2 Live Crew paved the way for T.I., Lil Wayne, Pitbull, and Rick Ross to succeed in the rap game by being the first group to take on the East Coast hip-hop elitists.
Today, Miami booty music still doesn't get the respect it deserves. Last year, 2 Live Crew and other old-school Florida rappers were not invited to perform on the Legends of Hip Hop Tour featuring Salt-n-Pepa, Doug E. Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, Big Daddy Kane, and Kurtis Blow.
The success of that tour inspired me to put together the Lollapalooza of bass music. DJ Magic Mike, the 69 Boyz, Quad City DJs, DJ Kool, JT Money & Poison Clan, and Sir Mix-a-Lot will join 2 Live Crew for a 20-city tour this summer. All of those artists sold millions of records and sold out shows across the country and the world, but they have never gotten any recognition. I'm also working on adding Lil Jon to tie present-day Southern rap to the past.
This tour will show the public we're the ones who really diversified hip-hop. Bass music is party music. It didn't matter if you were black, Asian, or Jewish, everybody loved songs like "Me So Horny," "I Wanna Rock," "Daisy Dukes," and "Shake What Your Mama Gave Ya." They still do. There is not a day that goes by when I don't run into Cuban and Jewish lawyers and doctors in their mid-30s, men and women, who tell me how they loved jamming to 2 Live Crew as teenagers. Anyone who comes to the show will be partying their ass off for three straight hours. This reunion will be bigger than David Lee Roth and Van Halen getting back together after 27 years. I’m very excited about it.
i am in my mid 40's and remember 2 live crew being a part of my youth growing up in miami in the 1980's. stop being so uptight, if it wasnt for groups like 2 live crew, miami music would not be in the scene. i can not wait for them to be in concert again. i love the music but love the controverisy more because it still surprises me how back then this music was consider vulgar but if you listen to today's rap, 2 live crew is a long lasting lollipop. we all dont have to enjoy all kinds of music and if you dont like it, dont read it, listen to it and fan out on it. me personally i am super glad you are getting the group back together and you all should do a concert every single summer. let the new generations really enjoy this super fun music.

Okay, so I get the fact that Uncle Luke wants to be a journalist and be able to speak his mind, or run for Mayor, but using the Miami New Times as a promotional platform just isn't cool. I mean, New Times has it's place for this stuff, and Luke's column isn't the place.
Talk trash, tell us about corrupt city and county officials, but please, can you lay off the 'We are having a tour' crap?
Wow I grow up in the Naranja PJ"s in Miami and I listened to 2 Live Crew. When the older ladies would say turn that S**T off I would CRANK it. They started calling me Dirty White Boy and you can bet I'll be at one of their concerts when they come my way. I'll be the 42 year old white man with the shirt that says I want some P****Y. Look out black girls Dirty White Boy will be back in affect.
Hey Crew...come out to New Mexico. You guys are the best. I got my sex education listening to you guys! And you know what my greatest thrill is! And girls always ask me why I "love" so much! I can't help hearing your song when I put her in the buck.
Damn terrorist suicide bombers! Why can you never find one when you need 'em? I'll even buy his ticket to the show.
