Tim Tebow should quit now

Luther Campbell, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Campbell tells Tim Tebow that his calling is outside of football.

For the first time in the history of the NFL, a player is actually bigger than the game. Like Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali, Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is a worldwide athlete. The league needs him more than he needs it.

Even nonfootball fans want to know why everyone is talking about this white kid spreading the gospel on the field. More than 40 million people tuned in to NBC last Saturday night to see Tom Brady and the New England Patriots pound Tebow and the Broncos. Two weeks ago, the Broncos-Steelers matchup received the highest TV rating in 24 years for a wildcard game. According to CBS, an average of 25.9 percent of homes in the top 56 U.S. television markets saw Tebow win his first playoff game by throwing an 80-yard touchdown pass.

No other player has been vilified for his belief in Jesus Christ like Tebow has. "Tebowing" has become a way to make fun of the guy. On a site called Tebowing.com, Santa Claus is shown kneeling and praying the same way as the Heisman Trophy-winning former Florida Gator. So are a bunch of toddlers. And of course they sell T-shirts. A pair of guy's football pants, which a jokester claims he puts on "two legs at a time," sold for thousands on eBay. Saturday Night Live even did a sketch in which Jesus suggests that Tebow "take it down a notch" on the worshipping and "read the playbook" if he wants to win.

That's why it's time for him to quit. Tebow could fill a stadium with 70,000 people who want to hear him sermonize. If I were his advisor, I'd tell him to retire while he's ahead.

No matter how much he succeeded this season, the guy will always face unrelenting criticism because he is not the prototypical franchise quarterback.

Tebow can afford to walk away in his prime. Both the quarterback and the American people would be better served if he were spreading his gospel.

Luke has a point: Tebow is a very polarizing figure who is known more for being a "God Warrior" than his QB stats. Prediction: he will be traded from team to team like other over-the top athletes who like to be the center of attention and distract from the game (Dennis Rodman, Terrell Owens, Chad Ochocinco). Management and teammates will eventually get tired of hearing about Tebow's religious beliefs and pledge to remain a virgin until married.

If injured, he could always join Kirk Cameron on his TBN show where he rudely confronts non-Christians in public settings and make them feel bad or look stupid for not getting saved.

Luke your Gospel is the Idol of Luke. Sex sex sex ofcourse thats going to sell that is part of this world system under the sway of the dark one. Its easy to serve your self and exalt yourself like you have done over the years. But a guy who serves the Lord you put how ironic. Well one day you will see the light one way or another.

Luke, it is not "his" gospel, but the Word Of God. Tim Tebow is a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. Maybe you should come to Christ too. Who knows, it might change your life and legacy.

You hate him because he is white. You hate all races that are not black. If a white guy wrote with the same racist angle are you, he would be fired and run out of town.

Why would Tebow settle for 70000 in a stadium when he reaches 40-50 million people for every televised game. As he has said many times that his sports fame gives him a fantastic platform to spread the word of Christ. I also strongly believe that he will continue to learn and mature as a QB, ultimately becoming one of the premier QB's in the NFL. He has already mastered the toughest parts of being a QB, leadership, late game comebacks, having the belief of his team. Everyone wants to compare Tebow to 5,6, even 11 yr starters. Brady has approx. 5,000 pass attempts during games, and you wonder why he looks so polished. Given time and coaching Tebow will one day walk side by side with the best QB's in NFL history instead of their shadows

LC,

I find 99% of your content to be honest, logical, and right on the money. This, on the other hand, has missed wildly. While I don't believe Tebow is the best quarterback to don a jersey, he plays well, works hard, and yea, says thanks to Jesus a bunch. Is that enough to warrant telling him to give up the jersey? I think the Bronco's post season trip would say differently. They definitely went further than my beloved Dolphins.

Now, let's shake some booty and get back on track to all the other stuff that needs to be written about.

Since when is LC an expert in making career decisions for anyone? He needs to go about his business and let others make their choices. Besides, LC music or whatever he does has no impact on my thoughts or life. Get real LC!!!

Dear New Times, Why does this pathetic racist woman exploiting hate filled gutter reject have a steady publishing gig?Everyone in Miami despises Luther Campbell, I have never seen a single positive comment posted to one of his articles, no one likes this piece of shit, yet you continue to publish his brain dead, idiotic rants, day after day.Are you that hard up for content? Are you that out of touch with your base? Are you intentionally publishing worthless garbage, spewed by an even more worthless sub-human piece of shit? Trying to be provocative?or is this simply the best you can do? My dog would like to thank you for the free toilet paper (bout the only thing New Times is good for nowadays).

Tebow should come to Miami, but he wouldn't get hired though, he doesn't speak Spanish.

I think we would be better served if you gave up the commentaries and sold sweaters as you obviously know exactly nothing about sports or religion. But the best of luck to you and may the lord Jesus Christ bless you in your new career.

Man, great analogy Luther, but i believe God has assigned Tim to be a different kinda of preacher, and not your prototypical preacher either, but one who preaches through example and leadership through his play on the field. In other words, hes already Preachin Brother!
