Miru Kim's nude art with pigs made them sick, activist says

In December, a beautiful performance artist named Miru Kim took off her clothes, climbed inside a makeshift pen with two piglets, and lounged around nude for five days. Critics in town for Art Basel ate it up. It seemed like a win-win: Kim saved the pigs from a Hialeah slaughterhouse and made headlines for the Wynwood gallery Primary Flight.

But according to animal activist Ana Campos, Kim's performance had a filthy underbelly: Primary Flight ignored advice on how to care for the pigs, neglected their health, and then left them on a tiny Little Haiti farm inside a cardboard box. They didn't even donate the cash they'd promised for the pigs' care, she alleges.

"One of them had a waistline," she says. "Pigs aren't supposed to have waistlines."

Kim is unapologetic. "I am still not sure about why the animal rights activists are so upset," she writes in an email.

A month before the show, Campos asked Kim not to use the pigs. But Kim and gallery co-owner Chris Oh promised the animals would be taken to a sanctuary after Basel.

Instead, Campos alleges, they were sealed in boxes and dropped off at the one-acre Earth 'N' Us Farm at 7630 NE First Ave. on December 5. The farm's owner, Ray Chasser, says someone from Primary Flight agreed to pay him $8,000 to take care of the pigs.

But things went sour in a hurry. "One was sick when it came here," Chasser says. "It wouldn't eat, wouldn't get up." Soon both pigs began hacking. And Primary Flight never paid a dime, Chasser and Campos say.

December 19, Campos rushed to the farm after hearing of the pigs' plight. Christmas Eve, she loaded the animals into the back of her PT Cruiser and drove nine hours north to an animal sanctuary called CJ Acres. The sick pigs filled her car with shit, but Campos got them there alive.

They had pneumonia, Campos later learned. They are now on triple antibiotics but are expected to recover.

Kim says her artistic message should be clear. "My work, I hope, brought some consciousness to the audience about how close in essence human beings are to animals."

Primary Flight co-owner BooksIIII Bischof also denies blame. "We were naive in thinking that taking these two pigs away from their deathbeds and caring for them would create a positive dialogue."

Campos says both are clueless. "This is what happens when you exploit an animal for profit."

So, an obviously biased activist profits from exploiting someone who got into a questionable position? Nothing new there. Ana, tell the truth. You were offended by her being nude & decided that you could exploit the animal issue to debase Kim as an artist.

This is the kind of dumb that only city folks who have never set foot on a farm can come up with... Really? These pigs were well fed, clean, warm, and indoors. Give. Me. A break.

When not offering bribes "Attorney" Aric Kurzman has spent time removing himself from both Primary Flight websites.

Jill C. Weisberg "Project Manager" has removed the blog stating both pigs were living the rockstar lifestyle in little Haiti. After infiltrating the comments section with fake screenames she has earned the title "Bride of Frankenswine'.

Question: Which hipster/abuser/artist inserted the suppositories when the pigs were sick during Art Basel?

When are we going to address the destruction of private and public property allegations against Primary Flight?

Just picked up a copy of the newtimes today and read the article "PRIMARY FILTH" , Im laughing my ass off ..its about time someone exposed these dirty little fuckers in wynnwood ...they are fuckin thieves from the get go ...anything these guys have ever done is criminal, why not add animal abuse to their rap sheet

Funny that Mr. Bischof (Books the 4th) is whining about this being a "witch hunt" citing biblical quotes and Bertrand Russell to summon his young adult crew of homey sympathizers and scenester art groupies to represent by way of Facebook likes. It must have slipped his mind that just this past weekend Mr. Kurzman was emailing Ms. Campos on behalf of Primary Flight/Primary Projects offering to wire her money in exchange for her to not report their criminal misconduct to authorities. Is the proposition of bribery an ethical reaction for an attorney in response to allegations of animal abuse and permitting violations? It's no surprise that Mr. Kurzman, Mr. Bischof and his partners would enjoy each others' company so fondly.

Mrs. Kim's artist statement is beginning to come into a more relevant context, despite the work unto itself not really speaking for the naked artist's intentions as dull as they may be. Pigs and humans are quite alike to Primary Flight/Primary Projects indeed, in that they are dually subject to mistreatment, abuse and irresponsible behavior.

Not even in Los Angeles or Beverly Hills can you get away with doing this. Not good.

SO is Miru Kim also sick with pneumonia.. Was she dropped off in Little Hati to later be rescued by a kind heart who rec'd no compensation for the piglets? Did Miru Kim eat well while in the PEN with the pigs.. Did Miru Kim eat the same foods that the pigs did. How can she come close to understand the plight of these 2 piglets.. how can this be a representation of "consciousness to the audience about how close in essence human beings are to animals". The way this will be settled -- Primary Flight Gallery step up to the plate and own up the responsibility of these piglets. IF it was for that 9 hour trip to CJ Acres, those pigs would be another statistic at the expense of an A R T I S T thinking outrageously how similar the 2 are.

It seems that if the gallery had good intentions they would have secured a proper sanctuary for the 2 pigs BEFORE the exhibit took place. That is what responsible adults do. These people are acting like children more concerned with their own PR spin then the welfare of these animals they made sick. I say to Primary Flight Gallery - get off your lazy ass and give the money you promised as stated in the article to the rescue farm CJ Acres or shut up about how great you are saving the pigs. Sorry but the gallery did no such thing and I'm tired of these people using the media to continue their propaganda and slander of the true rescuers.

Instead of donating the money they collected in donations to the sanctuary they kept it.On Monday January 9 Aric Kurzman the attorney for primary Flight e-mailed me and offered me a bribe in return for not filing a police report for abuse and neglect. He said it would be easier to wire me money on Monday. What happened is illegal. What responsibility are the partners going to take in this matter they created? The gallery already admitted to collecting donations for the pigs so give them to miru or the sanctuary, never do it again and let's move on.

It makes me sick too. Seems totally a self-aggrandizing attempt by the artist, who would have accomplished a VERY similar point in a pen of inflatable pigs, perhaps with an added rubber snout. (PS - I'm copyrighting that and calling dibs for next year's Basel, and the balloons and I will be the stars!) Isn't it kind of cliche to call attention to a cause through nudity anyway? Now, a TRULY next-level exhibition would be a mother of twins breastfeeding in a pen with a sow mother caring for her piglets. That one is free, out there, and up for grabs. Now let's make some cruelty-free ART people!.

*yawn* You are about 5 months late on the issue and stand alone in your ignorance. The issue isn't nudity. What took place during the exhibit and directly afterwards was animal neglect and cruelty. The guilty party here is Primary Flight and they will always be associated with animal neglect and cruelty. Primary Flight asked for donations and then did not provide the money collected to Earth-n-Us Farm where they dumped these two very sick pigs. I personally donated and raised over $1,200 for their care at the sanctuary I drove them to. After I spoke with Miru Kim and advised her of Primary Flight's neglect she attempted to raise donations and personally donated as well. This is all about Primary Flight exploiting and abandoning two animals, leaving them for dead.

Both pigs were within one week of dying from pneumonia when I was personally contacted weeks later by Primary Flight to rescue them and bail the gallery out of the mess they had created. There was no *biased* activism prior to the exhibit or about the exhibit nor would there be.

The fact remains both pigs were neglected and almost died and this is exactly what happens when you bring animals along to make a buck. Miru Kim would have been just fine in her naked box all alone or with pig cutouts or a video like she has done in the past. You don't need to use animals to sell art. That was all the gallery's idea. Her photos are powerful enough to stand alone. It was the negligence of the gallery that caused the downward spiral in the health of the animals and their failure to honor their commitment to Miru Kim regarding the follow up care for those pigs.

The pigs were deprived of medication, food and a verbal contract to provide for them financially and that's well known. The lesson the gallery should learn is "Don't exploit and abandon animals and you won't have a problem."

Yes. It would in fact apply towards Books and Primary Flight partners. Thanks for posting.
