Get Deco'd Out

Drunk, drugged, bedazzled tourists stumble around South Beach intent on getting laid, with eyes only on the next party. It's good for our economy, but it also sucks, because their glazed gazes miss out on Miami's greatest treasure: its architecture.

Happily for the rest of us, the 35th annual Art Deco Weekend, kicking off Friday, will spotlight Ocean Drive's unique structures. For blocks, the street will be lined with vendors of all sorts, from those slinging food to those selling the finest period furniture. Former pinup and photographer Bunny Yeager is the grand marshal of the weekend’s parade. You'll surely find her riding in a classic vintage vehicle, jamming to the sounds of Miami Beach Senior High School's marching band.

Between the Betsy Hotel and the Clevelander, the music lineup includes everything from Kate Davis playing some jazzy bass to Suenalo's Latin funk-jam fusion. In collaboration with the Miami Beach Cinematheque, the Miami Noir Film Series will get folks in the mood for a mystery. Hell, it might also have us wearing stylishly dark 40s fashions, appropriate to don at the Miami International University fashion show.
Fri., Jan. 13, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 2012
