Reader mail: "Animals are not garbage"

Doggone Shame

Government cheese: Rescue groups are going broke trying to save hundreds of dogs abandoned near the Everglades ("Abandonment Issues," Gus Garcia-Roberts, December 22), but why can't or why won't the government fund these types of organizations? We pay for every idiot out there and for the most ridiculous things, but then we do not take care of our own here in Miami-Dade? It's absolutely unacceptable! Pet owners also need to be held responsible for their actions. These animals are not garbage.

Cash questions: I'd like to know much more about where the money raised by this group is going. I have been following this group online, and as of now it appears they have raised over $60,000, and a large number of items have been donated. Those are both wonderful things. To see people step up and donate like that is amazing, especially in such a short period of time. What concerns me is that they appear to be part of a larger group called No Kill Nation. They are an animal rights organization that revolves around a man who wrote a book about achieving no-kill shelters. Too many times when that group is asked about their beliefs and how to encourage no-kill shelters, people are simply told to read his book. Often times I have wondered if the group is simply a way to get his book sold.

Why is there no coordination with shelters, which have the ability to work with law enforcement to stop dogs from being dumped in the Glades? Why is there massive marketing going on to raise money yet little marketing to actually adopt out dogs? I'm amazed at the people stepping up to save the poor dogs. But I'm just worried that the dogs are being used. I hope for each and every dog that they find a loving home. As far as the humans involved, I wish for them to step up and answer a few questions.

No friend to dogs: What a piece of nasty fluff this article is. Why not print the truth about this situation? They are failing these dogs by not calling in animal control or major humane groups, and leaving the poor dogs to die until they can raise money to pay for veterinary services. This is no rescue, not when they are leaving dogs there to die and endure horrible suffering until they fill their coffers. This is a disgrace to those of us who are true rescuers.

Screw PETA: I guarantee you that the Humane Society and PETA have not given one dime to this rescue group. Their money is apparently better spent upgrading their own pension accounts or buying controversial billboards around the country than actually caring about rescuing and helping abandoned animals. I have given a bit of money and will give more today to put pressure on those groups to donate some of the millions they take in every year and never seem to donate to the actual animals in need.

Money wasters: I think it is so nice that people are helping the poor dogs, but I am worried about a group like this asking for money all the time. I wonder if they are a nonprofit group and if all of the money they raise actually goes to help the abandoned dogs. What are they doing with these dogs they find? Are they in boarding kennels or in people's homes? Boarding kennels are very expensive. It would be cheaper if they had Miami-Dade's animal control experts pick them up and then adopt them out at a shelter. I got a dog from the shelter, and he was only $50. If they just let animal control get them and had an arrangement to adopt each and every one, they could save a bunch of money.

Remembering Coach

Liberty City saint: Coach Sam Johnson, the Liberty City Optimist Club cofounder eulogized in Uncle Luke's column ("Luke's Gospel: Coach Sam Johnson Was a Hero. Now He's Gone," Luther Campbell, December 22) was an inspiration to my family and me — especially my brothers who were coached by him. Back in the late '80s, my younger brother Ralph's surgery was on the brink of being canceled because my mom did not have enough money to cover the surgical expenses. My mother, who was a single parent of five, called Coach Sam, and within an hour he was there to help. The surgery was a success. I know that Coach Sam is one of the reasons why my brothers turned out to be successful young men. He was like a father to everyone who was a part of the Liberty City Optimist Club. Thanks for giving back to our community, Coach Sam. You will be missed.

OMG you people commenting on the Everglades dogs have NO CLUE about rescue in Miami Dade county NOR the horrendous situation with our high kill alleged animal 'shelter.' The shelter takes in 120+ pets DAILY and an EQUAL AMOUNT ARE KILLED DAILY TO MAKE ROOM for the incoming. YES the Everglades dogs are a 501c3 non-profit and YES the majority of dogs are in boarding kennels or/vets offices at discounted rates BECAUSE OUR LOUSY CITIZENSHIP DOESN'T STEP UP TO THE PLATE TO FOSTER OR ADOPT. This occurs in the southern end of the county moreso than elsewhere (altho it occurs countywide) because of lower income and IMMIGRANTS who do not have the same value system as Americans regarding pets. Commissioners and county gov't, have TURNED THEIR BACKS on the south end of the county for decades. Animal Control doesn't even operate in Homestead instead they have an 'agreement' with Homestead police. When Miami Dade Police ran the public shelter under the leadership of former Mayor Alvarez THEY RAN THE SHELTER INTO THE GROUND, STOLE OVER A MILLION DOLLARL TRUST FUND FOR THEMSELVES, DROVE OFF ALL VOLUNTEERS AND RESCUE GROUPS, AND KILLED EVEN MORE PETS THAN WE DO TODAY. Get educated and quit complaining/gripiing and DO something to HELP. Foster, adopt, donate - something. Campaign for a dedicated tax to go towards animal welfare - more residents have pets than children today. Sending these dogs to MDAS is a certain DEATH SENTENCE. What this group is doing is trying to save lives. What have ANY of you done to help besides spout off your uneducated opinions? GET INVOLVED. LOBBY COMMISSIONERS FOR A FREE DEDICATED SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC IN HOMESTEAD. Go down and help catch/trap/vet/foster/adopt these animals. We killed nearly 30,000 animals in our 'shelter' last year. Some 'shelter.' I don't blame the shelter staff I BLAME OUR RESIDENTS AND COUNTY GOVERNMENT ESPECIALLY COMMISSIONERS WHO DOLE OUT THOUSANDS TO SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS TO SECURE THEIR VOTE AND LET ANIMALS DIE.

Lee Ann.... God bless you and the truth! I have met with comissioners.. Spoke to hsus .. am speaking with alex Munoz.. Reached out to all media.. Begging for help for the countless animals still out there, and continuing to be dumped like trash every single day.. Miami is a disgrace.. The animal control in homestead rolled his eyes at me and our volunteers when we stopped to ask him questions.. Offered solutions he rolled his eyes and said they do not care about the animals.. Nothing so far has been offered.. What was offered has Not been done.. We are begging for a spay and neuter mobile in the area.. We asked for signs to be put up letting anyone dumping an animal they will be fined and possible jail time.. Cameras to catch them in the act... Remember this is Miami..Third world country..We have done everything we possibly can to bring as much awareness ...We have saved over 100 lives.. Still saving. I got 3 calls yesterday 1 about a 9 yr old senior we saved, placed in foster with a lovely woman yvonne. Lily needed her leg amputated a few months ago.. 1,050.00 the after care.. she now went back into aussie for more tests.. Lily now has cancer.. 377.00 later.. Of course we will give her every chance at life we possibly can. Lily is happy in no pain.. We will let her live out the rest of what days she does have left with love and knowing she will never be dumped, left to starve again.. So ask us where the money is going.. This is one dog.. We have and always been here for the animals.. These haters, should be ashamed of themselves.. They are only hurting these abandoned animals. We have always been an open book on all our vets info and contact.. We have posted letters from our vets on the 100+ page, hand written by the vet himself.. I am done wasting anymore energy on these sad individuals that call themselves animal rescues... Advocates.... My focus will stay on the animals.. We have over 20 dogs and 1 cat who need my energy.. I spend 5 days a week showing them they are loved and we will not abandon them ...Feeding and leaving them is not an option.. After finding several hit by cars hours before we got to them.. That is when we decided no way no how will we leave any animal out there that crosses our path. It kills me and breaks my heart to see any animal in a cage.. I am reminded every single day by all of our wonderful supporters over 10,000 of them on our facebook page 100+ It is temporary and these dogs are so much better off being safe, warm, fed.. walked , loved while we work on finding them their forever loving homes. We post videos daily of their progress. Video and pictures of them going to their forever loving home... once adopted. All you Haters who have so much time on your hands.. We sure could use some dog walkers.. Why not come down spend time with these animals, show them love.. open your homes to take one in.. If you care so much about the animals.. Try becoming a part of the solution.. All this negative energy is a waste.. Our doors are open to anyone who would like to join our efforts and make a difference in even 1 little life. Amy Restucci
