Actor-turned-director Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz, The Bourne Ultimatum) made his directorial debut this year with Tyrannosaur, an emotionally charged drama that won Sundance’s Directing Award and Special Jury Prize for both of its leading actors. Surprisingly, there are no dinosaurs in this film, but there is a raging drunk of a widower named Joseph. Played by Peter Mullan, Joseph exhibits violent tendencies that made some viewers at the Toronto screening walk out during the opening credits. Though the film’s dark nature is apparent, it is ultimately a story of redemption, as Joseph happens upon a Christian thrift store worker named Hannah, played by Olivia Colman, whose sensitive nature seems to calm the beast within him. How anyone could sympathize with such a brute seems difficult to understand — until Hannah’s own demons are revealed. If you think your life is screwed up, wait until you see what Hannah has to deal with.
