Purebred Breeders allegedly sells sick dogs from puppy mills

From its South Florida headquarters, Purebredbreeders.com matches up thousands of pet lovers around the country every week with purebred puppies through a "network of responsible and professional dog breeders" that sell "happy and healthy" canines, according to the company's website.

The problem, according to a new lawsuit filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, is that the firm and its owner, Jason M. Halberg, actually sell sick dogs from urine-soaked, abusive, unsanitary puppy mills.

"This is the new way for puppy mills to do business," says Jonathan Lovvorn, chief counsel for the Humane Society, which is representing some of the plaintiffs.

The company, though, calls the suit bunk and says the Humane Society rounded up disgruntled customers to carry on its activist work against online dog sales.

"Unfortunately, the Humane Society has an agenda to push and we don't fit in the agenda," says Keryn Rod, director of customer care for Purebred Breeders, LLC. "They don't believe anyone should ever be selling a dog."

Since it was founded in 2005, Halberg's firm has grown into one of the largest online dog sellers. It employs more than 75 folks in Cooper City, north of the Miami-Dade county line.

But plaintiffs say they were misled by the site. Take Philip Michas, a New Yorker who says he paid $1600 for a puppy named Happy. The puppy arrived covered in feces and urine, Michas says, and later tested positive for "two ailments common to dogs bred in unsanitary, overcrowded puppy mills."

What's more, the Humane Society says the site has sold dogs from a number of known puppy mills, including a firm run by an Arkansas woman named Edna Hanegan, who was found in April 2011 to have 90 dogs stacked like shipping crates. "People need to understand that buying a dog over the internet isn't a good way to get a family pet," Lovvorn says. Not so, Rod says. The firm cut ties with every breeder mentioned in the suit when they learned of the problems and has refunded money to all the plaintiffs.

Most of the employees in Cooper City work to inspect breeders and ensure puppies are safely shipped, she says. "We've done a lot of footwork in vetting out the best breeders. I couldn't work here if I didn't know we strived every day to do the right thing."

PURE BRED BREEDERS ARE CRIMINALS

Where do I begin....most of you who have posted on here can not spell. Leads me to believe that you may be a little uneducated. I sell puppies through Pure Bred and am in no way a 'puppy mill'. I have a high level of disgust for those people who run them. They have made a very bad name for those of us who raise 3 or 4 litters a year. My babies are born inside my home and NEVER see the likes of a cage. I do it because I love it, not for the money as I have a full time job outside of my home. Pure Bred has given my family a way to sell our beloved little babies and at the same time protect us from 'bad buyers'.

I DID buy a puppy from Purebred Breeders and received a fine, healthy, socialized animal. The paperwork that camr with the pup showed she came from a breeder in Oklahoma. A legitimate breeder!I think if you morons are going to complain about this website/company, try learning to spell first, OK?

Ms Rod is a huge liar and derinately found her calling lying for Purebred breeders. They only got rid of the 6 breeders because they were forced too. Ask Ms Rod under oath about all the fake employees shes created. When this goes to court she will be locked up for perjury. By the way Jean Gortmaker told a bunch of people what you did.On top of that you will go down with the ship and when your lies surface your boss will blame everything on you.Saying he did not know anything. Why do you think you have no emails from them. they screwed up and all the old employees have proof but your ass will be locked up. I got fired because I said I woulf not lie.You are going to sit in jail for lying. Everyone that works there is knowingly lying and you were all made aware of it. Your greed will hold you accountable. Look it up you are knowingly defrauding people.I have plenty of proof since day one!

Millions of animals end up in landfills every year, just because they are unwanted. If someone wants a pet, look no further than your local shelter. If yor heart is set on a purebred animal - including puppies, Google the breed and seek out one of the many breed-specific rescues around the country. And for those of you who believe it's important for your family to experience the "miracle of life," it might make sense to visit your local shelter to see the tragiey of death. Please, spay or neuter your pets and boycott these puppy mills. No birth is the fist step toward no kill...

Shelter dogs don't come with problems. Their owners are their problems. I wish I had $.50 for each time I've been told we're moving and can't take the dog with us; the dog has gotten too old, or we just don't want the dog any more. You don't need to sell pets; there are thousands of good pets euthanized in shelters every year. 25% of shelter dogs are purebred dogs. Do you know there are shelters that have puppies, but they don't keep the puppies around more than 24 hours because puppies get sick too quickly. They're euthanized. I don't mind reputable breeders who care for the mothers and pups inside their homes (operable word being inside), who only produce one or two litters a year, who screen their adopters, who keep track of sire and dam information and don't breed closely related dogs, who safety net the puppies they place. I have a problem with puppy mills where dogs live in kennels or outside with minimal or no socialization, sire and dam information is kept but dogs are bred randomly, who sell sick dogs and don't care when there is a problem with the dog down the line, who produce litter and litter every time the female is in heat. I've seen these poor female dogs who can't walk because they've been kept in wire crates, whose infections aren't treated. I have a breeder release Toy Fox Terrier at my house right now; he's 10 pounds and is red and white. That's not the breed standard. I took him because the alternative was that the breeder was going to put a bullet in his head. He'll make a good pet if I can ever socialize him to the point where he's adoptable. Otherwise, he'll live out his life with me.

I find this claim to be bunk... The humane society and others that push this crap is just thta.... People want pets, do they not? then someone has to sell them... I dont believe in puppy mills nor in back yard breeders that are irrisponsible. The bottom line is most people want a puppy. It's easier to fit within thier home, its easier to train, and doesnt come withalot of the problems a shelter dog comes with. That being said The humane society needs to figure out there agenda and make it work without trying to BLAST anyone that sells dogs espically us that are out here trying to further the breeds and are responsible breeders!!!!
