In the ’80s and ’90s, Miamians fled the city’s urban core for suburbia, leaving mere shells of once-grand buildings in their wake. The Upper Eastside, which was once a tourist destination for its MiMo architecture and neon lights, began to look like something out of a postapocalyptic George Romero film. Fighting for survival, the motels soon converted into pay-by-hour establishments, thus giving birth to Miami’s unofficial red-light district. Thanks to James Beard-winning chefs, their Upper Eastside restaurants, and a swell of MiMo appreciation, the area is no longer a haven for such crimson-hued illicit activity. Meanwhile, Broward’s Fetish Factory is paying homage to the erotic De Wallen, the largest and best-known sex block in Amsterdam, with its red-light themed Alter Ego Fetish Party at Rouge. This Saturday at 10 p.m., don your steampunk, pinup, Victorian, leather, and fetish attire. Yes, the dress code is strictly enforced, and the intimate affair is limited to only 250.
