Calling All Herbivores

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden wants to show you how to grow your own vegetables. At this weekend’s annual Edible Garden Festival, the botanical park will become a wonderland of edible delights. There’ll be lectures, workshops, and cooking demos so you can learn to plant, grow, and then enjoy the fruits (and veggies) of your labor. Highlights include a cheese-making demonstration with Hani Khouri this Saturday at 2 p.m., and a garden cooking demonstration by Norman Van Aken and Justin Van Aken this Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Classes on everything from composting to growing tomatoes will turn you into the back-yard farmer you’ve always wanted to be. In case your own garden is not ready, you can purchase fresh avocados, Seminole pumpkins, and carambola, as well as fruit smoothies, jellies, and chutneys. Fairchild will also hold a scarecrow contest throughout the lush grounds.
Sat., Oct. 22, 10 a.m.; Sun., Oct. 23, 10 a.m., 2011
