If the mother-daughter age difference in The House of Bernarda Alba seems accurate, that’s because it is. Staged at the Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater, Bernarda Alba is a first-time mashup between area stage actors and aspiring University of Miami theater students. A new bridge program between the Arsht Center and UM gives would-be types the opportunity to work on a big stage with established pros. For this take on The House of Bernarda Alba, Federico García Lorca’s influential 1945 work, this means the two lead adult roles — the titular matriarch and her housekeeper, La Poncia — will be played by established local actresses. The rest of the cast will be students. At the same time, the behind-the-scenes operation teams up more students with the center’s stage managers and costume, lighting, and set designers. The director, Henry Fonte, also comes from the university, where he chairs the theater department and serves as producing artistic director of the on-campus Jerry Herman Ring Theatre.
