We dont have a problem with hair-hoppers, unless theyre sitting in front of us during the Actors Playhouse production of Hairspray at the Miracle Theatre. Set in 1962 Baltimore during the height of the segregation and integration conflicts, Hairspray tells the story of racism through one dancing, cake-loving teens eyes. Tracy Turnblad, played by University of Miami grad and New York-based actress Joline Mujica, wins a spot on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. She quickly becomes a teen icon, but shes vexed that the hit show refuses to integrate. Having been subjected to discrimination throughout her pudgy young life (shes initially scoffed at on the dance show because of her plus-size thighs), the moon-faced teen decides to stand up to prejudice and fight for an interracial dance floor. Creative director David Arisco has bravely taken on the jobs of both directing the show and playing Turnblads heavyset mom, Edna, a role played by drag queen Divine in the 1988 John Waters original.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Oct. 12. Continues through Nov. 13, 2011
