Kids aren't racist, schools are

Luther "Luke" Campbell, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke addresses the absence of bigotry in children.

When I drop my 2-year-old son off at day care, I am so amazed at how all the babies and toddlers just love being around each other. They don't care or understand which one of them is Haitian, African-American, Hispanic, or Martian. They're all happy when they see each other in the morning and cry when one leaves in the afternoon. At that age, children aren't picking up on their parents' prejudices.

But by the time the toddlers are old enough to attend elementary school, they learn to dislike others based on their skin color, ethnicity, or gender. It starts at home, where kids overhear their parents talking bad about Hialeah's Hispanics or Liberty City's African-Americans or Aventura's various ethnicities. Once children hear something negative about a place or a group of people, they hold onto the stereotype until someone corrects them.

Unfortunately, we can't expect the public school system to bring diversity into the classrooms because our population is so ghettoized. In Miami-Dade, Hispanics now represent 65 percent of the student population, five more points than in 2005. African-Americans are 24 percent, and Anglo students account for only 8 percent.

Look at specific schools. Most are painfully monochromatic. For example, when Miami Edison Senior High opened in the '20s, the student body was predominantly white. The school is now 90 percent black and 10 percent Hispanic. Virtually no non-Hispanic white kids go there, even though Edison is a zoned high school for Miami Shores, where almost half the residents are white non-Hispanics.

Charter schools are even worse. Last year, the Civil Rights Project at UCLA found that charter schools are "havens for white flight."

Under these circumstances, it's no wonder Miami's various ethnic groups have such a hard time understanding and trusting each other. So until I have to send my boy Blake to kindergarten, I'll keep relishing his racism-free life at his kiddie academy where all the children are having a ball.

If only the adult world could be like that.

Cont. down south I applied we went on the tour and she liked it. So we signed up for an audition went to the dance audition the lady white or Hispanic interviewed her and asked her how did she get to the school and was we moving down south in that area. What the hell that has to do with a dance audition. Of course the parents are not allowed in the auditions. Now I can see why? Racism starts at home so if you have the teachers or staff that's racist it's going reflect on our children when is it going to stop I had to experience racism growing up and I don't wish that on anyone but racism needs to stop it not right.

I have 3 children I stay in liberty city. We are African American. My race sometimes goes unknown because of my name and southern accent, that gets me by at times. I have always had to fight racism in miami from every aspect from employment to housing. On the other hand my kids were born and raised here in Miami. I never made it be known that racism exist still. I try to let my kids know that's it's more to life that's more than a color, but recently my oldest daughter

im a south florida native. im hispanic, but most by first sight percieve me as anglo. i went to school with just about every nationality, race, and religion you can possibly think of. to be honest, the whites out of all the groups were the least racist and for the most part preferred to get along with other groups. i found the minorities (including those in my group) to be more hostile, and ethnocentric against those that differed from them. another thing is that i listen alot to what people say around me, i quite frequently heard many of the black parents blaming "the cubans" for their lack of jobs, opportunities, and taking over miami. they made no bones about saying what they wanted no matter where they were or who was arround. bottom line is get past skin color, the poor me's, and etc. there is nothing that ever stopped you and i, or our children from doing anything we or they ever wanted. opportunities are there, if you go for them.

Saddly, it's as you say. I'm a cuban white grandmother, my grandson is black, his parents are cuban(my daughter) and haitian (the father). When I arrived in 2007 I went to live to Sunny Isles Miami, and I was hit by the horrible racism of newarrivals russians and some hispanics groups, all of them inmigrants. The jewish community, the same. Funny, the anglo were more normal, and the tourist population. Thanks God we moved to Miami Beach, black population is not much, but is different. In my country racism is not like here, so cruel. I want to find a state in US where my family and I could go and forget this word, racism.

With all due respect, Mr. Campbell, defining a school population as "ghettoized", could be perceived as a racist statement. I personally would have preferred the words "culturally rich", as I believe and teach my children that each culture has gifts and lessons that we need to learn. Oh, and by the way...I'm white, anglo, gringa...(what ever you would like to call it) as they come, and was raised in Alabama. Perceptions of populations and generations of populations are often deceiving.

Differences in classroom populations not only come in the color of skin, but also in ways of learning. I have a son with autism, and although we have had struggles finding the "perfect" school setting for him, I believe inclusion is the way and continue to advocate for his right to have an education among his peers. I don't really concern myself with what color a child's skin is...more important is that fact that the students should be taught to open their minds to each other and learn that each person might experience and learn from the world in a different way.

Keep it up Mr. Campbell...and good luck with the whole parenting thing ;) It's a challenge in today's world, for sure!

Well, the reality is that stereotypes exist for a reason. If someone doesn't feel comfortable being around African American, Hispanic or Asian people, that's because they see something they don't agree with or like. The level of education and home etiquette that goes on in the majority of the minorities' homes pay for it self in the results portrayed by these kids' behavior in school and everywhere they go. This country needs to turn to Jesus instead of Humanism as a way to solving their social and economic problems and feelings. Racism is dead and it has been for a long time. What still exist is poor parenting, and we see that everywhere we go. God bless all of you and wait for my book very soon. Humanism: The plague of the 21st century

I am a single mommy to three beautiful children who are white babies with a little mexican lol. I have always been the type of person to love and care for everyone no matter color, race, religion, and ethictnicy. I am teaching my children the same morals and also to have respect for all people. I beileve that if people like yourself keep bringing the issue up it will not be forgotten or forgiving. To make a better world and have everyone becoming all as one we must first see there is a problem (which there is), second it is to forgive, third is to forget, and last is to teach our kids better then our antcestors did back in the day. And for our school system honestly it is the teachers that are being hired. I know that my oldest is now in school and I love her school. the diversity is there though when i was going it was like 40 percent anglos, 40 percent african american, and 20 percent hispanic. now though it is about 60 percent hispanic, 20 percent anglos, and about 20 percent african americans. Now I am for diversity but I beileve that there is a problem in Miami and that is hispanics pretty much get what ever they want when it comes to jobs, welfare, etc. time after time you see a line at a store and is a hispanic cashier and there are two customer both walk up at the same time and one is anglo and one is hispanic that cashier will 99 percent of the time will take the hispanic. I beileve our government gives to much power to the hispanic which is pushing people away, which causes the schools to have more hispanics students and teachers so when there is a different race or color etc other then hispanic in a school then there is the problem of why schools are more racist then before because there is a domanation of hispanics and it is taking over Miami. I hope I have not offended anyone just speaking my mine lol

This is just funny. Its perfectly true and anyone who reads this knows it. Even those as stubborn as a mule can say its true. People are only racist because of schools, with their specifics. When you actually go through the statistics, any kid before kindergarten will hang out with anyone. Once kindergarten hits, they start to understand, and prejudice begins. If you dont realize that, you are incredibly racist.

Kids do not learn racism from their parents. They learn it from growing up and realizing it from their own life experiences.

Realist898

Its people like you Mr Campbell that keep racism on its toes, As far as children not seeing race is correct I fully agree. Its not the schools that are racists, its the parents that are racists. Children learn from their own parents how to act and view another by the color of their skin. Just the fact that you choose racism as a topic a great deal keeps the issue alive and well. Why not report on races getting along such as mixed marriage?? How about biracial children who are happy to be who they are?

Justice4all
Justice4all

Realist898 racist and discrimination is very much alive, however most people such as yourself believe that these issues are of the past and must be forgotten. Unfortunately, discrimination in our schools and in various settings have deep penetrating roots that not only lingered in this country's past but in our present times. Schools in Miami Dade County do discriminate children based on their race and disabilities. We only have to look back to a story that occurred about 1 or 2 years ago with Renaissance Elementary Charter School located in Doral, FL where a principal got away with discriminating a child that special needs. So its people like you that need to wake up and smell reality!

Why is our population so ghettoized? Why do we need whites to be around minorities or vice versa? This reporter has an old fashioned mindset. Nobody talks about how ghettoized rural whites are. Let's not forget that the majority of the country do not know who our neighbors to the north and south are, let alone details about other races. I prefer to focus on the quality of education rather that the race of everyone's classmates. being around whites does not make you any smarter. Who gave this idiot a column?

Calculusboy2000
Calculusboy2000

CC:

Rural whites own land. You are not in a ghetto if you own the ghetto and pay the taxes to keep your ghetto for your kids and grand kids who will build a new shopping center.

No one says that there should be any rule for whites to be around minorities or vice versa, but it is a fact that minorities, particularly blacks, have not "made it" until they live where whites live. That is because African Americans create a blood bath every where that they live- prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, junkies, winos, thugs, burglaries, murders- and wannabees litter the landscapes of African American neighborhoods. What we do? Run for refuge, respectability, and peace where white people live, but sooner or later our baggage follows us, and white people take off again.

Education would surely help. You are right. However, education does not come out of a bottle from Walmart. Kids need support. Dental visits. Food. Good parental attention. help with homework. Good role models. See if you can tell these things to a couple local African American drug dealers.

Mallory

Luke, your are 100% correct. Kids learn to discriminate from people around them. I taught my son at a young age that people have many different opinions; none are right and none are wrong, just different opinions. My parents were never racist or judged other by the color of their skin. As a white Jewish elementary kid, I use to hang out with my school friends in Richmond Heights back in the 70's. Racism has no place in America.

what we got here is a catch 22..its whats folks see on tv its always a black face or another minority committing crimes so most white folks look at that like these folks are bad they always commit crime which is not true some black people want better and we do better but the system is set against us in a way were we try and they block us in but we need to learn how to make the system work for us...on another hand Hispanic folks be friend the white folks and think they are better than the blacks but they need to know they got black in them too not saying Hispanics are not cool they are some nice ones out there but the others think twice before befriending or talking to a black person...kids are not suppose to be thought racism cause all they want to do is have fun let them grow and find out how the world work for themselves and make their own decisions...PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERY RACE FROM EARTHLINGS TO MARTIANS lol

How blacks can still blame racism for their lack of success is beyond me. If a black man with "Hussein" for a middle name can become the President, that tells you that Americans are pretty open-minded people lol. The problem is that how 90% of blacks act and what "black culture" teaches black kids - that violence, drugs, gangs, speaking in ebonics, and mistreating women is cool. On the other hand, socially responsible and moral behavior is considered uncool. When you have a culture like this, how do you expect people to see you? Turn on BET and see what they're teaching the new generation of black kids. Take some responsibility for the culture you create.

Bunny

Luke, your observations are right, but the premises of your conclusion are faulty. Children hear parents talking badly about other people, but that is not the whole story. We must take it to the next level and consider that there is nothing that makes people more illogical than pain.

Many African Americans spend a life time chasing the American Dream by trying to keep up with the whites. Living where they live. Eating where they eat. Driving what they drive. Many whites spend a life time chasing the American Dream moving away from African Americans. Why is that?

It is because the conventional wisdom, frequently too profoundly, says that bad things happen where too many black people are. Black people know that white people's neighborhood are going to be safe. We know that their trash is going to be picked up. We know that condom wrappers, forty ounce bottles, injection needles, and McDonald's paper bags are not going to be on their carefully cut grass and byways. In other words we know what to expect when we find out where the white people live. It is going to be boring, but we know they see to it that the cops are there before something happens. When we see the ambulance in their part of town- chances are great that no one got shot.

We are sure we will not know what hit us where black people live- even the most bucolic seeming black neighborhoods. Black people must take responsibility for our conduct. Racist ignoramus are a dying breed. People who fear black people- including other black people- is an exploding population. Generally, we are viewed as a dangerous people, and we are doing little to change that perception.

I understand your frustration and you wanna voice your opinion on this subject matter but there's no need to use profanity. I'm Haitian I came here 20 years ago I couldn't even speak the language look at me now I have a master's degree and a successful career. The problem with the African American community a lot of you are too lazy and waiting for someone (the white man) to do for you. In reality there are tons of opportunities available, and most of you guys just don't take advantage of. Black people need to stop complaining, playing the race card, and the victim mentality I'm only 32 years old if I can do it you guys can do it also well my message to all black men "knowledge is power education is the key."

i live in liberty city and the people here are so stuck up on stupid fuck shit like race. black people need to wake the fuck up. the crime here is really bad, but when you tell them that they say crime is bad everywhere. BULLSHIT the crime in liberty city is way worse. They wont to admit it i don't know any other community, with the crime rate like this in dade county. Black people need to get their shit together. you whats funny black people waste their time, waiting for someone to call them nigger or someone do something they don't like and they cry racism. If you have time to worry about stupid shit like this why you cant go and try to get in office to change shit. The cubans come here and get ahead, the haitians come here and get head. then you get mad when they don't help you, NEWSFLASH black people there is no LAW that say the CUBANS AND HAITIANS NEED TO HELP YOU OUT. It piss me off when black people in liberty city, bitch and complain about the CUBANS when your asses been here longer than them. Why cant your asses get in power like the CUBANS. I tell you why because black people in liberty city take nothing serious. they use to complain about the old ass excuse about THE WHITE MAN. There is not that many white people in liberty city. When the white people left liberty city i want to know why the black people in liberty city couldn't get in office and there was no CUBANS here, why your asses could not get in office for mayor and other things. Iam just tried of all the fuck shit in this liberty city. You want to find somebody to blame when your black asses FUCK UP. What you need to do is grow the FUCK UP black people. For all you black people who haven't woke up, why is that i hear that only the young people here in liberty city doing the crime. Take some responsibility, the crime didn't have to be like this if the older generation would have stand their OLD ASSES and invest their in children education. liberty city would have been a whole lot better. How they expect for liberty city to get better if their OLD ASSES complain about the WHITE MAN AND CUBANS. YOU invest nothing so you get nothing. I always hear black people in liberty city say when they get some money they will leave liberty and move into a white neighborhood. Why you have to move, I never kown other races moving into liberty city, like japanese, koreans, muslims and some hispanics or in any other black community. Black communities in liberty city and the whole USA are fucked up black are just too stupid to REALIZE IT. Some people down the street from me got shot about ten of them 2 years ago. The person who did it never been caught. Just the other day a rapist was caught living down the street from me. Another thing is that black people here in liberty city complain about the police shooting and killing 8 black guys. When in reality you have a higher chance of get kill by someone black in your own damn community here in liberty city.A couple of months ago a reporter was reporting a shooting here in liberty city, right across the street two people started shooting at one another. The news reporter had to run in a store to protect herself. Now name some communities with all this crime going on in liberty city. I pretty much know all this shit don't happen in hialeah or the white community. NOBODY OWE YOU A FUCKING THING IN THIS WORLD NOT THE CUBANS OR THE WHITE MAN. Just like they did you have get up a go get it and STOP MOTHER FUCKING COMPLAIN all the time. Bill Cobsy was right WAKE THE FUCK UP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. I'M BORN IN LIBERTY CITY AND STILL LIVING HERE CAN I CANT WAIT TO LEAVE THIS HELL HOLE. I KNEW LUKE MOTHER A VERY GOOD WOMAN SHE DIED. I WAS LITTLE KID THEN, I THINK HER NAME WAS YEVON CAMPBELL STAYED 5 HOUSES DOWN THE STREET FROM ME IN LIBERT CITY. I USE TO GO ALL THE PARTIES LUKE USE TO HAVE THEIR. I REMEMBERED WHEN SHE GAVE ME A LARGE BAG FULL OF TONY THE TIGER BLESS HER SOUL. IF LUKE WOULD HAVE WON THE MAYOR RACE I KNOW THING WOULD HAVE CHANGED FOR THE BETTER IN LIBERTY CITY.

Close Uncle Luke; the schools are racist because adults, including the ones running schools, tend to be more racist than kids. I am half Latino, half non-Hispanic white. I look Aryian. I have heard prejudice aimed at both halves. I worked in Liberty City and heard some of the worst prejudice coming from the African-American community. Until we stop teaching this vile at HOME, this will continue. Every time an African-American doesn't get a job its not because they are 'Black' Every time the 'White guy' doesn't get the promotion it isn't because he doesn't speak Spanish. Maybe that other guy was better than you. We all want the same thing, a safe home for our kids and to help them grow up to be better than us. We want to work for decent pay and retire with dignity. What Mr Luke is saying is that school are racist. I grow up in Broward school system and I have friends and family that are part of Dade County school system too. Kids don't have no sign of racism in school. In Miami Dade the community are serograted what make it so sad community have a label/name meaning Lil Hait is majority Haitian live these community, Liberty City, Over Towne are majority black American mixsure of other groups. Lil Havanna are majority Cuban and the white live well kept area in miami coral cabel or south beach. What that been said school in those area will have greater percentage of diversity of that particular culture. The school have notthing to do how the communtiy are divided in miami. When the school borad placing the teachers and principles they place them base on where the community needs at. Luke refer Miami Edsion High in 20s it was all white school I 'm think they were more white teachers at this time. As the community change over period of time more black kids are entering the school the white teacher are transfering out west that happen alot in broward county some teacher does stay at the same school more choose to leave. Base on population of community school broad place the teacher and principle on community need of disciplin.

Is this posting for real??? Or is it a sad joke meant to poke fun at the learning situation in the School system??? You stated that you "GROW UP" in the Broward School System-which literally means you started in Elementary School. How can you say that you "GROW UP" in the School System and not know basic Grammar? I am not trying to be hateful or hurtful, but did you get past 3rd grade-specifically grammer??? In the following I have copied several errors you made that shows you do not have an understanding of grammer (There are several others that I chose to leave out). If you only spent 1 or 2 years in the School System and you were not an American Citizen then I can absolutley understand your lack of knowledge concerning Grammer, but you state that you "GROW UP in BROWARD SCHOOL SYSTEM". You posted "kids DON'T HAVE NO SIGN"; "the community ARE SEROGATED"; " WHAT MAKE IT SO SAD"; "COMMUNITY HAVE a label/name"; "Lil Hait is majority LIVE THESE COMMUNITY"; majority black American MIXSURE"; Lil Havana ARE MAJORITY Cuban and the white LIVE WELL KEPT AREA"; "What THAT BEEN SAID"; "School IN THOSE AREA"; THE SCHOOL HAVE NOTTHING TO DO HOW THE COMMUNITY are divided in Miami"; When the school BORAD PLACING the teachers and PRINCIPLES THEY PLACE THEM BASE ON where the community NEEDS AT "; "Luke REFER Miami Edison High", "I'M THINK THEY WERE" more white teachers"; As COMMUNITY CHANGE OVER PERIOD of time more black kids are entering the school THE WHITE TEACHER ARE TRANSFERING out west THAT HAPPEN alot in broward county SOME TEACHER DOES STAY at the same school"; BASE on population of community SCHOOL BROAD PLACE the teacher and priciple ON COMMUNITY need of DISCIPLIN".

LMAO. MY MISTAKE! It is rather ironic however, and I think a little silly that you made a point to show that used the wrong spelling of a word, but chose not to point out the writing of the aforementioned person that I was commenting about. EVERYONE makes a spelling or GRAMMAR mistake at some point or another-HOWEVER there is a HUGE difference in someone that CAN NOT write or CONVEY their thought in a logical (Or even a semi-logical) manner AT ALL, and someone that makes a general error. OBVIOUSLY-If I were to spell it correctly at one point, the average person with common sense would know that it was just a mistake. Now- if you have something to contribute to the actual dialogue, then we can stop wasting our time on this. Done and Dusted. :o)

Nooooo...... If we could EDUCATE the adults that WANT to be EDUCATED as to how their rascism is affecting their children and those children that they go to school with, and then shoot the ones that don't care, then we can get some where! lol What a hurtful, hateful thing racism is. Unfortunately, it is AGAIN left up to the School System to attempt to "FIX" the problem of the children not being properly taught right from wrong at home. God Bless our teachers that are forced to do more than teach. On top of "retraining" children right from wrong, They are now also forced to be body guards-and this is as early as Elementary Education. It's not a white vs black issue-there are thugs, bullies, drug dealers, racists and bottom feeders from all races.

Who cares if most white people do not want to live in South Florida? Most non-white people are comfortable being around their own kind. I'm very surprised that the Latinos of Miami-Dade have not made life intolerable for most black people in Miami-Dade, the way they have for most whites who have moved out of Miami-Dade. It's only a matter of time before whites in Aventura are no longer comfortable, and move north to Broward County. The Miami Dolphins are virtually in Broward County because most of the Latinos in Miami-Dade don't give a crap about American football.
