I think this is the first time I've read this and I'm glad I did because I've been saying it since I saw the film, "The violence is laughable not so much because it is excessive but because it so thoroughly pulverizes the driver's otherwise dent-proof façade." The styleized violence is fine by me...though the excessive sound effects to maximize the gruesomeness of the violence is a bit much and really the film experience was cheapened a little by it, in my opinion. The two instances I'm thinking are spoilers so I won't go there but in head thing and the thing with the mechanic.
Also, I watched it as a love letter to Michael Mann movies, no? I mean, that's the bar it's setting at the outset. It's great. A little pretentious and a few obvious plot holes but, otherwise, very very good. I wish more "action" movies took the route of Drive.
