New York has chess in the park, Europe has bocce ball in the plaza, and Boca Raton has shuffleboard at the retirement home. But dammit, Miami has dominoes in its back yards, restaurants, and even gas stations. Nothing symbolizes our city better than an old Cuban wearing a guayabera, puffing on a stogy, and playing a mean game of dominoes in Little Havana — well, except for the same scenario played out in Overtown or Liberty City (minus the guayaberas). Dominoes is Miami’s official street game, and just like anything successful from the street, it has gone corporate with leagues and tournaments. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. More games mean more dominoes fun. If you have a hankering for spinners and bones, or even if you don’t know what those terms mean, get to Doral Park Country Club for the Hispanic Heritage Fest Domino Tournament this Saturday at noon. We promise you’ll get hooked on the strategy of the game or at least the clickety-clack of dominoes slapping the tables. There’s $1,000 in cash prizes for the top eight finishers. Admission to the tournament costs $25 and includes lunch.
