In 2009, a film crew asked visitors exiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art to name three female artists. Not one person could. But artist and filmmaker Lynn Hershman Leeson expected as much. She was filming !Women Art Revolution, a documentary about female artists in the 70s and 80s who fought to break into the male-dominated American art world. She speaks with Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous activist group started in New York City in 1985, which kept report cards on galleries and offered weenie counts of the male-to-female ratio exhibited in major institutions. After finding that less than 5 percent of the artists in the Metropolitan Museum of Art were female, but 85 percent of the nude subjects were, these masked femmes asked, Does a woman have to be naked to get into the Met? Leeson investigates via interviews with clothed lady artists such as Judy Chicago, Adrian Piper, Betye Saar, Nancy Spero, and Martha Rosler, who all fought sexism when trying to get their work recognized. See !W.A.R.this Thursday at the Bill Cosford Cinema, followed by a discussion with Yvonne McCormack-Lyons, founder of the Womens International Film & Arts Festival; Christina Lane, director of the Norton Herrick Film Archive and University of Miami motion pictures professor; and Rina Carvajal, Miami art curator. Beginning Friday, !W.A.R will also screen at the Miami Beach Cinematheque (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) and O Cinema (90 NW 29th St., Miami).
