You don't get to be one of the most respected and recognized singer-songwriters in the Latin pop world without putting in the time. Of course, Venezuela's Franco De Vita certainly got off to a good start. His self-titled solo debut released in 1984 went platinum and featured three hit singles: "Somos Tres," "No Hay Cielo," and "Un Buen Perdedor." Thirty years later, "Perdedor" continues to be a gold standard in De Vita's repertoire, recently getting a makeover in his live album, Franco De Vita en Primera Fila, from Sony Music Latin's Primera Fila series (which also includes installments by Thalia and OV7). That early success set the stage for his remarkable career. But the honest and forthright poetic style showcased in his debut was only a taste of what was to come. Since his 1986 followup, Fantasia, De Vita has never let up -- from the massively successful 2004 release Stop, fueled by the leadoff single "Tu de Que Vas" and the runaway hit "Si la Vez" featuring Sin Bandera, to his recent Primera Fila. He'll perform at the James L. Knight Center on Saturday.
