From Cain and Abel to the dudes from Oasis, brothers have a long history of fighting and generally acting like pricks with each other. Sometimes it's jealousy. Other times it's because they simply have nothing in common. In the play The Brothers Size, two brothers living in the Louisiana bayou find themselves at odds for their very souls. One is a single-minded man, looking to open his own business and make something of himself. The other, an ex-con, is a wandering cat, living with his head in the clouds and looking for escape. Needless to say, this causes a tiff between the two. And after a trouble-seeking buddy from jail shows up, crap really hits the fan. Written by up-and-coming local playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, The Brothers Size delivers richly drawn characters and delves into West African myths, profound storytelling, and the ageless theme of two brothers who love each other enough to strangle one another. McCraney grew up in Miami's Liberty City, graduated from New World School of the Arts, and went on to be honored with Playwright Residency at the Royal Shakespeare Company in London, as well as the first New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award for The Brothers Size in 2009. The play runs through October 2 at GableStage.
Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Sept. 3. Continues through Oct. 2, 2011
