Maybe it's our picturesque sunsets or the sight of the Atlantic Ocean from high above our beaches, but something has drawn aviators to Miami since the Wright brothers built that toothpick with wings. Miamians might know that Pan Am Airlines had its famous flying boat terminal at Dinner Key Marina, or that Eastern Airlines was headquartered at Miami International Airport, but few people realize that Amelia Earhart last took off from American soil in the Magic City. And only a smattering of locals have been out to Zoo Miami to see the remnants of what was once the Richmond Naval Air Station, with a huge hangar that housed blimps used to detect German U-boats off the coast of Miami Beach. Even fewer folks know that Col. Paul Tibbets Jr., the pilot who flew the B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, lived in Miami (that last bit of history we could have done without). From Homestead Air Reserve Base to Opa-locka Executive Airport, Miami is chock full of aviation stories. HistoryMiami, in conjunction with Miami Dade College's Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Picture Archives, presents Planes on Film, a screening of news reels, films, and home movies about that history, this Sunday. Besides the moving pictures, aviation experts and know-it-all Miami historian Dr. Paul George will be on hand to talk about the city's thirst for flight. Call to reserve your space.
