people shouldnt be fooled with a persons age, life has showed me that some elderly people are very aggressive and think they are above everything. i dont think city of miami cops are looking to for trouble if you obey them than thats that!!! as for those 9 black people that were killed when a cop tells you to put your arms up than you better listen dumbass. or else you are going to get hurt or even killed whether you are black,hispanic, or white etc. people think they are above the law!

I believe in Law Enforcement and respect the Law, but trust me, It would be safe to say that the average IQ of a Police Officer in the South Florida Law Enforcement is is well below 50. What kind of mentality would beat up an old lady or fire 120 rounds into a car into a man at the steering wheel. "Think" about it!

I cannot imagine a situation under which an old lady should be manhandled like this... I don't agree with Luke on many things, but seriously... FELONY CHARGES OF BATTERY? It's an old lady!! I would be embarrassed as hell if I actually filed criminal charges against an 85-yr old...
I'd love to see the arrest report, get the cop's name and find out more about him... Is he a big guy? What does he weigh? Is he in shape? Are there any previous complaints against him?
Why the hell would he file such ridiculous charges?

I am a Caucasian-American who lives in the Grove, and I agree completely that this is outrageous. Even if she did attempt to take his gun, even if she did resist arrest, this level of response is clearly uncalled for.
I would like to think that the police are there to give every person within their jurisdiction the maximum amount of protection possible, with the highest level of professionalism and discretion.
However: every time I see a cop, they are parked somewhere, not doing their job, talking on a private cell phone to some girl they met and "hit on" while on duty. If not talking to some girl, they're taking free food or other perks from the local business owners basically, a protection fee (Nice store you got here, sure would be a shame if a crime happened and we couldn't show up in time, huh?).
Then, the one time they have to be bothered to actually do their jobs by guarding a crime scene, they over-react and escalate the use of force to preposterous levels. Was this lady that sneaky and quick as to wrest your gun away, Officer? Or were you too busy kickin it to some girl on the phone and not even paying attention to the residents you were needlessly harassing?
Name the time and place, and I'll be there to march.

I just called the Coconut grove police department to verify this story and it did happen.The cop asked me if i was present and i told him this was not the issue.An 85 year old woman should not get assaulted by a bunch of coward thugs dressed in uniform.I will bet anything that most of the people taking up for the cops do not have the balls to call a police station to ask for any information.Miami is so full of faggots(no disrespect to gays),it's pathetic.All those macho men are good for only one thing;Beating up on women ,even if they are 85 year old.

Any cop who doesn't have the compassion or at the very least people skills to deal with an 85 year old woman shouldn't be a cop. PERIOD. I've tried to support police but these miami clowns give all police a bad name, seriously, the only thing missing in this story is a tazer. I don't know how old you are, but maybe when your mother is 85 you will understand because I am sure you would appreciate some tolerance for her should she "step out of line". But, since it could take many years before you parents are that age since your tolerance level seems to be that of a very young person, I suggest you try visiting a senors center so you can get to know some elderly people. You might realize that at 85, you really don't have the capacity to be a threat to anyone.

By the grammar used by some of the posters here, I can tell that the education level is at best 9th grade or lower. My mom is that age and she breaks a bone practically if you touch her! In the last year she broke her hip - hip replacement surgery,,,then a month ago she fell against a cabnet and broke her arm. OLD PEOPLE ARE FRAGILE AS GLASS And BTW their aren't as fast in the mental department either! No one will EVER convince me that the cops acted appropriately,,,black, white or purple with pink polka dots, no one should ever treat an elderly person that way!

I know a handful of 80-something year old men and ladies who can hold their own and give police a run for their money. I bet this sweet, little, innocent lady can too! The judge dropped the charges after this lady learned her lesson; OBEY A LAWFUL COMMAND. Police don't give these lawful commands to throw their weight around. They have to control a scene and they have a job to do. NOBODY is above that, not even a senior citizen.
Enough cop bashing Luke; you are exacerbating the problem. The problem lies in our communities. How about doing a piece/article on how to focus on that?

I don't know the whole story but my common sense tells me the 85 year old lady is not capable of doing the things the officer claims she did. I apologize on behalf of law enforcement, not all of us are the same. In fact, most of us are well educated, dedicated professionals.
