Zarzuelas (a lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes) are common in Spain and its former colonies such as Cuba, but Florida Grand Opera has never performed one. Until now. In anticipation of Luisa Fernanda, the company’s first zarzuela and its 2011-12 season opener this November, FGO is hosting a summer-long series that pairs opera experts with screenings of the film version of Luisa Fernanda. The first, Cine Zarzuela: Wynwood, took place at O Cinema and completely sold out. The next, Cine Zarzuela: Miami Beach, will happen Wednesday at the newly renovated Miami Beach Cinematheque. Hosted by musician Tito Puente Jr. and NBC Miami’s Roxanne Vargas, it will begin with strummings from a local Spanish guitarist, followed by a history lesson from an opera expert who will introduce Luisa Fernanda.
