In December 2007, the Florida Marlins traded superstar slugger Miguel Cabrera to the Detroit Tigers for a package centered on two major prospects: Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller. After three frustrating and fruitless years, both players were jettisoned this past offseason for far, far less than what the Marlins paid for them. Miller was shipped to Boston for next to nothing, while Maybin was sent off to the San Diego Padres for relievers Edward Mujica and Ryan Webb. Though Maybin hasnt been spectacular for the Padres, he has improved at the plate while providing stellar defense. The specter of both Maybin trades will hang over this series and, if he continues to blossom, possibly over the Marlins franchise. Did the Fish deal Cabrera for a fair package? No. But did they cut their losses with Maybin before the gamble could return any gains? The answer to that question looks increasingly like a yes. The showdown of intraleague titans will take place Tuesday night at Sun Life Stadium.
