More About
Pretty in Pink, John Hughess 1986 class-consciousness teenage melodrama, is best told through its soundtrack. To the Psychedelic Furs Pretty in Pink, we meet Andie (Molly Ringwald), who works in a New Wave record store, has a crush on a rich preppy named Blaine (Andrew McCarthy), and is lusted after by best friend Duckie (Jon Cryer). When Blaine eventually stands Andie up, Duckie soothes her with his rendition of Otis Reddings Try a Little Tenderness. After Andie and Blaine finally lock lips, Duckie sulks to the Smiths Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want. Andie confronts Blaines snobbery to New Orders Elegia. After both arrive at prom dateless, Duckie helps Andie reunite with Blaine to the sweet, sweet sound of OMDs If You Leave. Such classic tuneage is the reason Thursdays screening of Pretty in Pink at the Gusman Centers Olympia Theater will also be a dance party. Ladies, wear your prettiest rose-colored 80s frock, and men, pop your collars. After the screening, dance under the historic theaters faux starry sky and spin in homage to better times when there were still New Wave cliques in the lunch room, when there were still New Wave record stores, or heck, any record stores at all.
