You won’t find Miami-based belly dancer Tamalyn Dallal standing still. The performer, teacher, and choreographer also writes books, produces CDs, and directs films. Catch her latest creation, the documentary film Zanzibar Dance, Trance, and Devotion, at the Miami Beach Cinematheque (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) Thursday. A Q&A with Dallal will follow the screening. Zanzibar Dance presents 26 indigenous practices, including religious devotionals, wedding and harvest dances, and trance-inducing spirituals — many of which have never been filmed before. In July, Dallal will make her fourth trip to the semi-autonomous Tanzanian state located off the coast of East Africa, where she will screen the film, distribute DVDs to the artists, and host a workshop. Exploring world cultures and teaching belly dancing, Dallal is fascinated by the history and context of the various dance forms she encounters. Her book 40 Days and 1001 Nights tracks her journey through five countries with Muslim majorities. She has repeatedly returned to Zanzibar after falling in love with its music.
