Brave Passage

As if dueling with the Florida Marlins for a playoff position wasn’t incentive enough, two prominent Atlanta Braves will have extra motivation as the team makes its first trip of the season to Sun Life Stadium. It starts with Fredi Gonzalez, the Braves skipper, who also happens to be the winningest manager in Marlins history. Gonzalez was admirable if not exceptional as leader of the Fish, but his abrupt firing last June was a fitting parting shot for a tenure that was colored by constant tension with owner Jeffrey Loria. It continues with second baseman Dan Uggla, a onetime Marlins lifer who holds the franchise record for career home runs. Uggla wanted to finish his career with the team, but contract negotiations turned into a standoff that led to him being shipped to the Braves. What’s worse for the two is that their counterparts are shining in Miami: current Marlins coach Edwin Rodriguez might be doing the best job in baseball, and second baseman Omar Infante has played a key role in a much-improved defense.
