Though a regular-season matchup between the Florida Marlinsand the Chicago Cubs is unlikely to make national news, there is still something special in the air when the two teams meet. The players, coaches, and soon the stadiums will have changed. But thanks to the infamous gaffe by exiled Cubs fan Steve Bartman in Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship series, the two franchises are inextricably linked. Not only did the Marlins end the Cubs’ chances of winning a World Series for the first time in nearly a century, but also they went on to celebrate their second championship in six years. You can feel the slight undercurrent of aggrieved animosity in the stands during Marlins-Cubs games, where some Chi-town fans act as though something was stolen from them and the judge still didn’t rule in their favor. The fact that the Marlins have started the 2011 season so hotly can only be sand in the eyes.
