The international EDM community is still a major sausage fest. But there's no denying that women are on the rise. Over the past few years, DJ-producers such as Anja Schneider, Cassy, Nina Kraviz, Maya Jane Coles, and Steffi have been challenging the norm.

Recently dubbed "the new queen of house" by DJ Mag, Deniz Kurtel is one of the latest additions to this growing rank of female power players. It helps that Kurtel is a card-carrying member of the hotly tipped Wolf + Lamb collective, which fostered her fledgling studio work. But lend an ear to Music Watching Over Me, her 2010 debut long-player on Crosstown Rebels, and you'll hear the work of an authentic talent who needs no hype to win over listeners.

The album is a brooding and seductive work with plenty of banging floor grooves, including standout track "The L Word," featuring Jada, which was ubiquitously heard throughout WMC and Miami Music Week. Catch Kurtel when she makes her first headlining Miami performance at the Electric Pickle this Friday, and find out why the ladies are taking over.
