Rush Limbaugh? Sean Hannity? Bill O'Reilly? All of you right-wing gasbags can line up and get ready to kiss Pablo Cano's ass. Miami's favorite puppet master has a doozy to give all the president's haters their just deserts. Inspired by Barack Obama's historic election, Cano created The Seven Wonders of the Modern World, a multiple-performance run featuring a cast of skull-staving marionettes at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Scripted by Carmen Peláez, choreographed by Katherine Kramer, and scored to melodies from 16th-century overtures to 20th-century show tunes, the show explores themes of hope and chance via seven modern advances. Cano's Obama, constructed out of a grandfather clock, plays MC and engages various “wonders” (e.g., rockets made of coffee cans, and “Amazonia,” “Googleina,” and “Facebook” with ukulele bodies and basket heads). Known for working with found objects fished from thrift stores and trash heaps, this year's production is Cano's tribute to the Theater of the Absurd. Sadly the artist couldn't find a douche bag in his travels, so Ann Coulter is missing from his show. See the wonders come to life this Saturday. When not in use, the marionettes and set will be on view at MOCA as an exhibition through May 29.
Sat., May 7, 4 p.m.; Tuesdays-Sundays, noon. Starts: May 7. Continues through May 29, 2011
