Say what you want about soccer in this country (it’s a second-tier sport, it’s popular only because of soccer moms, and there’s not enough tackling), but the rivalry between the American and Mexican teams is among the most passionate on the continent. Mexicans never tire of besting their gringo brethren, and Americans like to show they can beat their south-of-the-border neighbors at their favorite game. So when the two nations square off on South Beach during the Beach Soccer Worldwide Miami Cup tournament at 3:30 p.m. this Friday, don’t expect a picnic on the sand. Chances are better for sand being kicked in faces. The Americans will have even more reason to be surly because Mexico recently eliminated the U.S. from participating in the upcoming FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. The two countries will be joined by soccer powers Spain and Brazil in a three-day round-robin tournament played in a temporary stadium on South Beach (on the sand between 20th and 22nd streets). The tournament will feature some of the best beach soccer players in the world and draw some of its biggest fans. During a break in the two games played Sunday, there will be a celebrity game including pop stars, actors, and athletes from other sports. Admission is free.
April 29-May 1, 3:30 p.m., 2011
