Barbershops breed good comedy thanks to loads of idle time and plenty of shit-talking. Remember the movie Barbershop and its sequel? It’s no coincidence those movies spurred, at least in a two-degrees-of-separation kind of way, the Barber Shop Comedy Tour. Both Barbershop flicks star Cedric the Entertainer, who was also part of the Original Kings of Comedy Tour alongside funnyman D.L. Hughley, who happens to be the headliner of the Barber Shop Comedy Tour. Hughley is best known for his turn as the main character in the short-lived sitcom The Hughleys, but don’t expect the toned-down TV version of his comedy on this tour. He likes to poke fun at audience members, black people, and especially Whitey. “White folk got the littlest dogs I have ever seen in my whole life... ‘Her name is Peppers. She weighs three pounds and cost $2,000.’ Well, you should have named her Cocaine.” Hughley joins DeRay Davis (the heckler-turned-comic who played Ray-Ray in both Barbershop movies), Earthquake (you’d think he was bigger), and Gary Owen (the token white guy) when the Barber Shop opens at 7 p.m. Saturday at the James L. Knight Center.
