In the 1995 documentary The Celluloid Closet (adapted from Vito Russo’s 1981 book of the same name), Hollywood’s formerly garish and derogatory portrayals of LGBT characters seem almost cartoonish — especially when you think of all the strong, funny, and endearing LGBT characters on the silver screen today. Fortunately, the 13th annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, which runs this Thursday through May 1, will explore all kinds of LGBT characters, including the good, the bad, and the fabulous. Presenting more than 50 films, the fest will begin with Kick Off, about the deconstruction of the modern male athlete, showing at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Colony Theatre. Then at 3 p.m. Saturday, cult favorite Tipping the Velvet will screen in its entirety (a treat for all of us who had to watch it as a miniseries on the Logo channel) at Regal Cinemas South Beach (1120 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach). Unfortunately, MGLFF must come to an end, but it will do so with a bang May 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Colony, with the world premiere of Going Down in La-La Land, about Hollywood dreams that turn to dust, based on the novel by Andy Zeffer.
