In the video message announcing the seventh annual Borscht Film Festival, Werner Herzog mouthed the words to Pitbull’s “Defend Dade.” Thanks to some artful dubbing, the famous filmmaker spat out, “I know they see Miami, they think beach, palm trees, lights — that’s why we call it the Magic City. But once you cross the bride, it’s a whole ’nother life.” Since 2004, Borscht filmmakers have showcased stories from the real Miami, some of which have gone on to screen at the Cannes, Sundance, and Tribeca film festivals. This year, they’ve paired Miami music icons with local filmmakers and artists. The resulting 12 music-inspired shorts, and one videogame, will screen at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall. The MC for the night: none other than James Francco — a robot. Here’s a sampling: Local band Animal Tropical and Jorge Rubiera join forces in a short about Florida conquistadors’ humiliation. “Play Dead” is a zombie-puppy flick by horror cineastes the Meza-Valdes brothers and features music by Rachel Goodrich. Artist Jillian Mayer, Rakontur’s filmmakers, and Luther Campbell pitched in for “The Life and Freaky Time of Uncle Luke.” Another highlight is the MillionYoung and Barry Jenkins project “Chlorophyl.” Jenkins, a former Liberty City football player now living in San Francisco, made the acclaimed indie hit Medicine for Melancholy last year. A limited number of free tickets are available.
