With a veritable tsunami of unclassifiable dubby breakbeat flooding the international scene, it's easy for music critics to lump the entire mishmash under the dubstep genre. But don't even think about adding Mount Kimbie to the pile. The duo's sound has more in common with the musique concrète of early-20th-century avant-garde sampling pioneer Pierre Schaeffer than the screechy bass wobble of producer Skream.

The acclaimed UK production tag team of Dom Maker and Kai Campos got picked up by the Hotflush imprint, home to a slew of fellow experimental broken-beat exponents such as Scuba, Sepalcure, and Instra:Mental. Nor is it a shock that Crooks and Lovers, Mount Kimbie's 2010 debut long-player on Hotflush, is a lush, meticulously crafted sonic kaleidoscope of hazy field recordings, gently syncopating beats, and woozy, organic samples. The album mostly makes for the kind of deep, meditative home listening we haven't enjoyed since the Orb or Aphex Twin's ambient works.
But with the benefit of a proper club sound system to amplify the duo's sub-bass frequencies and thicken up the kick drums, a live Kimbie performance must be a different story entirely.
