Sicily has had to deal with a media onslaught of unfavorable perceptions. Not only is it the de facto Mafia-origins backdrop in movies such as The Godfather, but also now it’s been forced through the warped hole of reality TV. Each time Vinny from Jersey Shore shows off his tattoo based on religious imagery from that city, or a Real Housewife drunkenly croons about how proud she is to be a “Seeezeelean,” an angel on a cupola dies. So it’s no surprise that Emanuele Viscuso, an Italian transplant to Miami and an acclaimed sculptor, decided to take matters into his own hands. With the Sicilian Film Festival, he presents a showcase of multifaceted perspectives from the region’s long-established film industry. (Resident Giuseppe Tornatore won an Oscar for Cinema Paradiso, and badass cinephiles such as Frank Sinatra, Martin Scorsese, and Frank Capra trace their roots there.) This Monday at 7 p.m., the festival will bring select scenes from the city’s most acclaimed movies to the Miami Beach Cinematheque, followed by Baaria, Tornatore’s latest, a Golden Globe-nominated family saga.
