Gal Costa at the Fillmore Miami Beach March 19

It's possible you're not too familiar with Gal Costa. Hell, you might have never heard of her. If that's the case, you probably aren't all that into Brazilian music in the first place. Because Costa's career in música pop Brasileira has been a storied one.

More About

Costa, born Maria da Graça Costa Penna Burgos in Salvador, Brazil, has all the right ties to her native country's musical sphere, such as working with famed contemporaries and near-legendary artistic exports Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. She's also paid dues to her motherland's quintessential styles, from the traditional roots of bossa nova to the psychedelic tropicalismo movement of the late '60s. And of course, the sultry songbird has amassed 30-plus records throughout her five-decade career. Perhaps chief among them is 1973's India, which featured a very risqué closeup of Costa's red bikini bottom, complete with camel toe.

Whether she's still that brazen at 65 is a question you'll need to ask her this Saturday at the Fillmore. But as recently as five years ago, she was quoted as saying she considered herself "at most 42."

I can't believe what I just read regarding Gal Costa's upcoming concert. If it was up to this the concert would have been a total flop or success for all the wrong reasons.Who is writing such ignorant and clueless reviews for such a great publication like New Times respected in the So. Florida community for being so centered and cool at the same time. This person obviously has no idea of what they are writing about, perhaps a few google searches and put it together like they probably did to get through college. It's not an offended fan but it hurts the vast intelligence and culture of those of us who live beyond the ephemeral MTV culture to read someone referring to a world reknown musical icon like Gal Costa in such a stupid and vulgar manner. The writer as much as the editor who's supposed to read proof what is published is at fault here. I know for a fact there is much talented journalists who contribute to NT publishing so please make sure you assign your stories to those who can enrich the content of what in the end is published to stay in the rightful place you hold in Miami.
