Boys (and Girls) in the Hood

Showcasing hip-hop, salsa, merengue, and soul music, the Tony- and Grammy-winning musical In the Heights will hit the Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House for a six-day run. The musical takes viewers on an eclectic musical journey through a Dominican-American neighborhood in Washington Heights, New York. It’s filled with colorful characters dealing with the growing pains of their urban upbringing. There’s Usnavi, who dreams of opening a bar in his native Dominican Republic. Benny is in love with his overprotective boss’s daughter, Nina. Nina loves Benny too, but her father wants her to finish her education at Stanford University even though her academic scholarship has been canceled. There’s also Daniella the neighborhood gossip, Sonny the streetwise kid who works at the bodega, and requisite neighborhood graffiti artist Graffiti Pete. And in the middle of it all is Abuela, the neighborhood’s beloved grandmother who’s in for quite a personal triumph. The infectious score breathes life into this urban tale of three generations and the amiable sweetness of chasing the American dream.
