Feel the Hoise

Every ear has an energy point referred to as a “spirit gate” or shenmen in Chinese medicine. Acupuncturists use tiny needles to prick this spot above the ear canal, claiming such auricular torture alleviates anxiety and dispels depression. Think of this week’s XXI Subtropics Experimental Biennial of Music & Sound Arts as a series of sonic puncture wounds that might just snap you out of your humdrum fog. On Friday at 6 p.m., witness the “Marathon Subtropicalia,” where more than 20 sound artists perform at Inkub8. Highlights of the lineup include artist Nestor Prieto, who controls noise with subtle facial expressions thanks to electroencephalography (EEG). During the Second Saturday Art Walk, experience Frozen Music ensemble’s Walk, a sound environment featuring electronic music composer David Behrman at Dorsch Gallery (151 NW 24th St., Miami). On Sunday,at noon, listen to Frozen Music members Gustavo Matamoros, David Dunn, and Rene Barge at Frozen Picnic, an outdoor soundscape at Collins Park (2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach).
Fri., March 11, 6 p.m.; Sat., March 12, 7 p.m.; Sun., March 13, noon, 2011
