Experimental composer David Tudor’s 1973 “Rainforest IV” is an electro-acoustic environment, where sculptures and everyday objects are used as speakers. By placing a contact microphone on, for instance, a tea kettle, the device used to boil water transforms into a vibrating noise machine. As part of the 2011 Subtropics Festival, Florida International University’s Laptop and Electronic Arts Ensemble (FLEA) will perform this unusual symphony at the Wolfsonian on Friday. The group is comprised of graduate and advanced music technology and composition students. Nine of those computer experts will use over a dozen objects to turn the museum into a concert hall. Guests will be free to walk through the gallery and explore the makeshift speakers. Don’t worry: The objects used won’t be actual museum artifacts but rather objects found at thrift stores or on the Internet that resemble items in the museum’s collection. Venture into “Rainforest IV” from 7 to 9 p.m.
