There’s no better seismometer for groundbreaking performance art in Miami than the annual Miami Made Weekend. Commissioned by the Miami Light Project and Arsht Center, the series includes the 305’s most innovative multimedia artists, dancers, and thespians in three programs. Here & Now features premieres of works commissioned specifically for the festival, while Incubator showcases works-in-progress. Lastly, Outloud gives South Florida playwrights time in the spotlight. The weekend will commence on Friday at 7 p.m. when Carlos Caballero and Elizabeth Doud evoke Samuel Beckett to ponder oil, unemployment, and mermaid suffrage. The night will continue with Fat Boy, hip-hop theater by Teo Castellanos, and Phalussy, in which Pioneer Winter examines the corpse of gender and chivalry. And New Times MasterMind finalist Ana Mendez will present The Body Is Present, a performance homage to Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta. Miami Made Weekend runs through Sunday with pieces by more artists, including Liony Garcia and Octavio Campos. All performances take place in Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater.
March 4-6, 7 p.m., 2011
