National Signing Day: pettiness reigns

Uncle Luke, the man whose booty-shaking madness once made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Luke addresses the pettiness of college football's National Signing Day.

On National Signing Day last week, University of Miami Hurricanes head football coach Al Golden attracted top players from St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Phillip Dorsett), Coral Gables High School (Denzel Perryman), and Homestead High School (Ricardo Williams).

But I believe University of Miami could have landed more kids from the area if not for certain high school coaches in Miami-Dade County who don't want to support the school.

C. Stiles

Of the Miami Herald's top 25 high school football players, only two are becoming Hurricanes. Why? High school football coaches here are encouraging kids to go to other schools.

I used to hear a lot of complaints from some coaches about University of Miami ignoring its players. But 'Canes coaches would respond that their high school counterparts didn't want to send kids to the school in Coral Gables.

South Florida high school coaches need to come clean with their grudges and hidden agendas. Kids playing football in Miami grow up dreaming of putting on an orange-and-green uniform. The only reason these kids get turned off to the school is because coaches whisper in their ears that they shouldn't go there. It needs to stop. The coaches are encouraging these kids to attend institutions far, far away from their families. In some cases, the relatives can't even afford a plane ticket to visit. Is the high school coach going to pay the airfare? Hell no.

One way to address this problem is to change the recruiting process. Universities often send correspondence to the high school, not the player's home. So the coach ends up controlling communication. Something needs to be done so that parents are notified first when a university is recruiting their child. I've known parents who have no idea who is chasing their kids. They've asked me who is pursuing their sons.

Local high school coaches need to sit down at a table with the Hurricanes' Golden and his staff to air out grievances. They need to tell him what hasn't been done and what needs to happen in the future.

Just like I do.

They took the SAT's. Or someone took the tests for them. Fake I.D.'s are a norm here and all over the country. And I know this first hand. Kids are pushed through high school based on their athleticism. And then through college. Have you ever listened to most of the college and pro players speak? A 7th grade vocabulary at most.

They're lucky they're even signing - I bet most of them didn't even take the SAT. Lies, lies, lies - like everything else!

Perhaps the individual coaches have recognized that a particular student would benefit from getting away from thier particular environment. Most high school coaches are advocates for thier players and can offer them guidance and perspective that is based on that students needs, not whats good for the U or uncle Luke.

Going away to school allows a child to develop and evolve outside the comfort zone of their parents. Regardless of which school they attend leaving home is often a great choice for students as individuals.

I will encourage my children to go away to school. They are welcome to come back to Miami after college but they need to experience living on their own away from home.

This is the most bias piece of crap I ever read. It's something wrong with a head coach, who probably didn't even attend the University of Miami, to tell a kid to look at other schools? I find this absurd and quite convenient that you are one of the U's biggest advocates. University of Miami's education isn't even ranked better than UF and FSU, respectively. Why hinder a child from visiting somewhere else and not having an open mind? All that will do is have the U pick and deny kids like it's a factory line. Shame on you, Luke.

dont forget though Luke, that the last few years, Shannon has been enamored with the Northwestern product.. there have been far too many great players here, that have been ignored by the U. As a UM fan, I respect that Coach Golden apologized to the local teams for the way the previous regime did business, its a sign that the local talent will be approached and hopefully stay locally.

That's the problem with UM, you don't need to know how to spell coaches (couches)
