According to this year’s Forbes Magazine misery index, Miami is the second most miserable city in the United States. The publication cites our city’s overwhelming political corruption (referencing Miami’s 404 government officials convicted of such) as a major misery factor. But Miami-Dade Transit’s Black History Toursprogram proves that not all government is bad and that riding the metro bus can be cool, comfortable, and educational. The award-winning program, developed in concert with Black Historical Archives of Miami, takes you on a three-hour tour through Overtown, Brownsville, Allapattah, Liberty City, Coconut Grove, and Virginia Key — just in time for Black History Month. An expert tour guide will tell you all about historic clubs, famous celebrity hideaways, and the stories behind structures and boundaries that still stand today. To top it all off, it’s free. Catch a bus at Stephen P. Clark Government Center every half hour from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
