Weare the Dance Is

Aching for some intense dance? (And no, we don’t mean Natalie Portman’s nutso ballerina’s self-mutilations in Black Swan.) Ballonor sauté(bounce or jump, in ballet parlance) to see Kate Weare in her modern dance company’s first visit to the Florida Dance Festival’s WinterFest, which runs through January 29. The Kate Weare Company, based out of New York City, will present Bridge of Sighs, a work from 2008, and Bright Land, its latest work that debuted last fall at the famed Joyce Theater in Manhattan. The last, set to a soundtrack of Crooked Jades’s soulful music, is described as a piece that “speaks to the human experience.” Bridge of Sighs, meanwhile, is described as an “ardent and unusual quartet for two women and two men, looking at the instincts — both reckless and wise — that drive us upstream toward love.” Sign us up. In addition to Weare, the company includes dancers Adrian Clark, Leslie Kraus, Marlena Penney Oden, and California-born but Florida-raised Douglas Gillespie, who got his BFA from Florida State University.
